The warning signs were there. In his inaugural address, Donald Trump hailed William McKinley, the President who went to war with colonial Spain and gained a foothold in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines and Cuba. Trump said in that speech that the US would carry its flag “into new and beautiful horizons”. And in the National Security Strategy document from late last year, the White House said it would “reassert and enforce the Monroe Doctrine”.

You know what’s been missing in Donald Trump’s second term? Firings. He loved a sacking the first time around, a hangover from his The Apprentice days. This term, not so much.
