Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I made my own newspaper in elementary school, serving as reporter, art director and salesperson. Unfortunately, nobody wanted to pay for it.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I bought a typewriter from a thrift store when I was a teenager, and thought that it would give me magical writing powers. It didn't.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has become overwhelming. I think the deluge of nonstop news is actually whetting appetites for longer, thoughtful pieces.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Harriet the Spy.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To tell the truth.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I enjoy talking about story ideas one-on-one.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram is where I end up spending most of my time.

Why did you become a journalist?

I heard lots of things about how the world worked when growing up, and was skeptical about a good number of them.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Talk to people. Journalism is more about connecting with other humans than anything else, including writing. Be dogged.

When's the best time to pitch you?

All the time!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Any pitch that starts with "Dear Sirs." Just don't.

What's your favorite drink?

Lulo juice in water, with a little bit of sugar.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On my bike.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

It's hard to pick just one, and the answer changes often. Right now I am really interested in the new Medium publications on several topics.
