Weather pattern is looking more active across northern Utah
It’s been years since we’ve had such a dry start to the winter season, but finally we’re starting to see signs of change. This year is reminiscent to the start of the 2014-15 winter season. There’s been little snow and extended days of inversion thanks to a persistently strong ridge of high-pressure dominating the western half of the country. This type of pattern diverts the storm track, blocking storms from getting in and promoting inversions in the valleys.
Dirty air makes for pretty frost in northern Utah
Sometimes you just have to find the silver lining, even when it’s a bit of a stretch. The inversion has been tough to handle the last few days for the valleys, especially in Salt Lake County where there have been three Red Air days in a row: Yuck! But have you noticed the beautiful frost formations that developed because of the cold, saturated air that refuses to budge from the low-lying valleys?
Winter storm approaching: Snow, ice seem imminent
Wednesday remains dry through most of the overnight hours with moisture arriving in the south valley just before sunrise Thursday. (KOIN) PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The coldest air since January has settled in and a moisture-laden storm system is heading into this airmass to bring a big dose of wind, snow, sleet and freezing rain to parts of the valley, metro and Gorge. Easterly winds start cranking Wednesday afternoon and will intensify through the day Thursday.
Cold continues with possible wind, snow, ice mid-week
Temperatures will fall to the freezing mark and below for most of the valley/metro & gorge areas each night through Thursday morning. (KOIN) PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Temperatures will fall to the freezing mark and below for most of the valley, metro and Gorge areas each night through Thursday morning. Afternoon highs will have a tough time climbing out of the upper 30s. We’ll at least get to enjoy drier weather through Wednesday afternoon, but by Wednesday night the weather could take an ugly turn.

Post-Typhoon Nuri May Set Record in the North Pacific
Ex typhoon Nuri tied for the strongest tropical cyclone of 2014 last weekend packing 180 mph winds. It weakened considerably as it brushed by Japan. It’s no longer a tropical system now, but it’s poised to become the strongest extra-tropical cyclone ever in the North Pacific ocean. Remember in my blog earlier this week when I talked about Nuri changing up the jet stream creating a big weather pattern change?
