Computer Science > Computation and Language
As language models (LMs) exhibit increasingly consciousness-like behaviors, evaluating their cognitive abilities becomes essential. We introduce AwarenessBench, the first comprehensive benchmark for assessing the cognitive abilities of LMs in four dimensions: metacognition, self-awareness, social awareness, and situational awareness, covering 15 cognitive functions and 14,381 samples.
Oxford early graduation steadily rises
More than one in three Oxford College students matriculated early to Emory University’s Atlanta campus this spring, marking the highest early matriculation rate in six years. In total, 166 of the 493 students who entered as Oxford’s Class of 2025 — 33.7% — left the campus after three semesters, according to data from Assistant Director of University Communications Rachel Smith.
Emory community, Georgians gather for presidential election watch parties
Anxious Georgians gathered together on Nov. 5 to watch the 2024 election unfold. Emory University held watch parties at Harland Cinema and at Oxford College and the Oxford Votes Initiative and Oxford Young Democrats hosted separate watch parties in the Phi Gamma Hall and the Oxford Student Center Greer Forum, respectively. The Georgia Democratic and Republican Parties hosted watch parties attended by legislators, political operatives and foreign leaders.
Rockdale County sues BioLab for repeated threats to community after chemical fire
Rockdale County commissioners launched a federal class-action lawsuit against BioLab and its parent company, KIK Consumer Products, for damages to local citizens and companies. The lawsuit, which commissioners filed on Oct. 29, came a month after a chemical fire erupted at the BioLab facility in Conyers, Ga, about six miles from Oxford College.
Emory Global Diabetes Research Center awarded $22 million for Type 3 diabetes research
The National Institute of Aging awarded the Emory University Global Diabetes Research Center a $22 million grant toward the Cardiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia (CARRS) Cohort’s research on the link between Alzheimer’s disease and insulin resistance, which the National Institutes of Health classifies as Type 3 diabetes. CARRS Cohort co-Director Venkat Narayan believes the grant opens numerous possibilities for research on the link between diabetes and cognitive disorders.
Oxford Asian Culture Club and Culinary Club chef up joy
Oxford’s Asian Culture Club (ACC) partnered with the Oxford Cooking Club to host “Sip ‘n Savor,” an event that brought authentic Vietnamese and Indian cuisine to Oxford College on Oct. 3. As students walked into Murdy Hall, they encountered a sea of people lining up outside the kitchen for a treat after a long day of classes. ACC’s Co-President Amanda Chen (25Ox) shared the importance of celebrating Asian cultural cuisine while learning about different cultures in Atlanta.
Oxford continuee panelists share advice, resources for Oxford graduates
The Emory University Student Government Association (SGA) hosted an Oxford Continuee Panel on Oct. 1 to share resources with Oxford College graduates transitioning to the Atlanta campus. These resources include advising for pre-law and pre-med students, pre-professional networking nights and one-to-one application counseling sessions. Additionally, panelists shared advice with students on how to make the transition from Oxford to Atlanta easier.
Chemical lab malfunction sparks fire near Oxford College
A BioLab plant in Conyers, Ga. caught fire earlier today, causing an orange and gray smoke plume to rise above the facility about six miles from Oxford College. No one was injured in the fire, according to a BioLab representative. Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said a sprinkler head malfunctioned and caused water to mix with a water-reactive chemical around 5 a.m. this morning.
Dynamics of symmetry-protected topological matter on a quantum computer
Abstract Control of topological edge modes is desirable for encoding quantum information resiliently against external noise. Their implementation on quantum hardware, however, remains a long-standing problem due to current limitations of circuit depth and noise, which grows with the number of time steps.
Extracting Geometry and Topology of Orange Pericarps for the Design of Bioinspired Energy Absorbing Materials
1 Introduction Nature provides many examples of materials with desirable mechanical properties, such as high strength,[1-5] high toughness,[4, 6-8] and high impact resistance.[2, 9-12] Some of these materials are periodic, like nacre,[1, 4] conch shells,[13] and beetle wings,[5] while others have irregular structures, like trabecular bone[2, 9, 10] and citrus pericarp.[14, 15] However, periodic bioinspired materials are more widely studied than irregular materials, as they are more easily...
Compelling Storytelling
I only recently started understanding the importance of storytelling, particularly in the context of design. The way you frame your design decisions and intentions with a story or narrative can drastically change the way people view and envision your designs. To explore how to be a better storyteller through visuals and words, I’m creating a Pecha Kucha presentation about who I am versus who I am perceived to be.
Investigating Visual Hierarchy
To better understand what elements make for good typographic visual hierarchy, I’m setting out to make a 8.5 x 11 typographic poster for a series of lectures provided by the Art Institute of Chicago. The information that I should include is as follows: The first thing I started to do was get a bit more information on the intent behind the design. I considered the following questions: • Who initiates the series/content? What do they care about? • Where and when does the delivery take place?
Not this again…
Dear lord. Apparently another “viral math problem” is on the loose. Let’s see… Oh no… The reason I dread it is because there was one from the year before that is basically identical aside from the numbers: Ugh… why do I hate these types of “problems”? They’re purposefully ambiguous to effectively divide the internet, pun intended. Wait… there’s a pun in saying that? Yes. The division symbol is the cause. Like, THE cause. Let’s get into the math behind it.
Rays of hope through the COVID-19 pandemic
By Kyle Y. Chen For the Tribune Sunday May 10, 2020 at 5:04 PM Since its outbreak, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to every continent except Antarctica and has infected more than 4 million people worldwide. From cities shutting down, to education systems halting, to entire economies collapsing, there has been a torrent of panic and grief. However, all across the world, ordinary humans have also been carrying out extraordinary acts of kindness to help others in need.

Thermogalvanic Hydrogel for Synchronous Evaporative Cooling and Low-Grade Heat Energy Harvesting
Efficient heat removal and recovery are two conflicting processes that are difficult to achieve simultaneously. Here, in this work, we pave a new way to achieve this through the use of a smart thermogalvanic hydrogel film, in which the ions and water undergo two separate thermodynamic cycles: thermogalvanic reaction and water-to-vapor phase transition.
TOP TIRE TIPS THIS NATIONAL TIRE SAFETY WEEK
By Kyle Chen May 20 – 27 is National Tire Safety Week, an industry initiative led by the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and supported by Bridgestone. The week centers on reminding drivers about the important role tires play in road safety. For commercial fleets, a proactive and routine tire maintenance program is one of the most important and best practices they can implement, both for the efficiency and the safety of their operations.
OTHER VIEWS: Retreads offer value for fleets of all sizes - Tire Business
Fleets want to be more efficient in business operations and seek solutions that not only impact the bottom line, but also enable them to operate sustainably. As dealers, it's critical to have the products, technologies and services to meet these shifting needs. That's where retreads come into play. Retreads offer dealers a proven solution for reliable, profitable and sustainable mobility that can help fleets lower the total cost of tire ownership.
