Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, as a child.

How is social media changing news?

It's making it more immediate – and challenging credibility.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Everyone in the 2010 film Morning Glory.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

A quick email, no longer than three sentences that detail who/what is going on and why it's applicable to me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Drive. A lot of Google Drive.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram? Increasingly, none but, alas, it's hard to escape their pull (particularly in this line of work). GoodReads is great too.

Who do you wish followed you?

People interested in learning more about queer subjects. Or! People who want to be lightly entertained or laugh at oddity in society.

Why did you become a journalist?

I consider myself more of a writer but I found my way here from wanting to write and having experience producing news.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was the editor of my high school's yearbook. It was a disaster.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

An upcoming story on queer food.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Start your own website. Write for yourself, publicly.

When's the best time to pitch you?

First thing in the morning, Mondays.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

"Tips from Eva Longoria on Prepping for the Holiday Hosting."

What's your favorite drink?

A very dry cava, closely followed by a crisp champagne.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Biking somewhere.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Magazine. It's the smartest publication out there. (And T because I love Hanya Yanagihara.)

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That corporate or branded attempts to appeal to queer persons is of note, that these efforts aren't confusing activism with consumerism.
