A native of Kansas City, Mo., Kyle MacMillan served as fine arts critic of the Denver Post from 2000 through 2011. Since 2012, he has freelanced in Chicago, writing locally for the Chicago Sun-Times, Ravinia Magazine and Chicago on the Aisle. In addition, he has contributed to such national and international publications and websites as the Wall Street Journal, Art in America, Early Music America, Selvedge Magazine and Classical Voice of North America.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I worked part-time in college as a sports journalist at the Raytown (Mo.) Dispatch-Tribune, a suburban paper in the Kansas City, Mo., area.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Nothing tops William Boot, who stumbles into being a foreign correspondent in Evelyn Waugh's witty masterpiece, "Scoop."

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being an arts journalist means enlightening readers about the joys and wonders of all aspects of the creative and cultural world.
