Alfalfa Weevils Are Active Earlier than Usual this Spring
By Kyle Verhoff and Emma Matcham et.al Alfalfa weevils are active, so now is the time to get out and scout our fields. With above average growing degree days (GDD) across the state in March, alfalfa weevils are growing in their size and their ability to cause damage. Alfalfa weevil are one of the two main insect pests for alfalfa in Ohio and do a majority of their damage feeding on alfalfa foliage before first cutting.
Big harvests, narrow margins: How “comfortable” are South American soybeans and corn, really?
By Raphael Galo, Head of Agribusiness and Structured Operations at A7 Capital For anyone in Ohio watching South America at the end of January, the spreadsheets still look reassuring. USDA’s January WASDE and the latest official Brazilian and Argentine surveys describe a 2025-26 season with abundant soybeans and corn flowing out of the Southern Hemisphere.
Get ready for February frost seeding
By Emma Matcham, Kyle Verhoff, Jordan Penrose, Ohio State Extension Frost seeding is a relatively inexpensive practice that can introduce more legumes, and thus more nitrogen fixation, into many pastures. Below are some answers to frequent questions related to frost seeding. When should I frost seed? February is the optimal time for frost seeding in most of Ohio.
Cover Crops and Manure Following Wheat
Courtesy Photo Following wheat harvest is a great window to get field work started and apply manure to farm fields. We can do a few things to best capture and utilize the nutrients from our manure, such as incorporating during application or as soon as possible after. Another great tool to capture the nutrients is to utilize cover crops. Many of our cover crops have the added benefits of aiding in weed control and possible usage as a forage.
Alfalfa Weevil Scouting and GDD
By Kyle Verhoff and Jason Hartschuh et.al Despite the chill in the air, overall rising spring temperatures are beginning to bring activity back to our fields. The good news is that we get to scratch that itch and get more active in the field; the bad news is that our pests get to be more active, too. Alfalfa weevils are one of the two key alfalfa pests in Ohio.
From drought to frost for forages
By Jason Hartschuh, CCA, and Kyle Verhoff, Ohio State University Extension This year is presenting many challenges when it comes to forage toxicity and ensuring that we have safe feed for our livestock. Drought conditions have led to an active discussion on forage toxicity and the potential for frost in the future presents an additional concern. These environmental conditions increase the risk of prussic acid poisoning, nitrate poisoning, and increased bloat in multiple methods of feeding forages.
Fall Forage Management
Laura McKenzie Fall provides a great opportunity to scout and manage forage hay fields and pastures. In established stands, final harvest or intensive grazing should already have taken place to allow a fall rest period, except if planning to frost seed legumes. If needed, there is still time to soil sample and address winter annual weed concerns. Soil test fields that will be seeded to forages next year. Apply lime as needed to adjust pH levels.
Corn-to-Go - Ohio Ag Net
Managing manure application when STP >50 By Greg LaBarge I often get questions about managing manure applications in fields where Soil Test P (STP) is above the maintenance limit of 50 parts per million (ppm) in the Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations for Corn, Soybean, Wheat, and Alfalfa, Bulletin 974. Be aware that the Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations provide recommendations for the economical use of purchased fertilizer.
