Knight comeback charge falls short
A Northeastern football season highlighted by high-scoring games decided in the final seconds ended with the same: Alexandria held off the Knights 48-40 in a Class 2A, Sectional 36 first-round matchup Oct. 23, on a clear and cool fall evening at Northeastern. The Knights nearly rallied from a three-touchdown deficit, but a determined comeback bid came up 6 yards short in the end.
G-C rains on Bulldogs’ senior night
Talk about putting a damper on Senior Night: Gabe Everhart plunged into the end zone from 2 yards out with 36 seconds remaining for the winning points as Greenfield-Central spoiled the regular-season finale for the Centerville football team Friday, Oct. 16. The final score was Greenfield-Central 14, Centerville 12. In a game played on a soggy night on Marlin Craig Field, Class 5A Greenfield-Central snapped a seven-game losing streak and halted Class 3A Centerville’s three-game winning streak.
Bulldogs run winning streak to 3 games
One week after Jace Hollendonner used his arm to set a school record, he used his legs to help the Centerville football team continue its late-season winning streak. The Bulldogs spoiled Senior Night for the Trojans on a textbook fall evening at New Castle’s Neal Field. Hollendonner ran for tide-turning touchdowns on back-to-back touches on each side of halftime to give the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish in a 41-35 Eastern Crossroads Conference victory at New Castle on Friday, Oct.
Homecoming king delivers for Knights
After the offenses piled up 92 points total, a defensive play by the Homecoming king preserved the Northeastern football team’s win against Centerville on Friday, Sept. 18. Trent Deloney intercepted a potential game-extending pass in the end zone as time expired and then dashed more than 100 yards the other way for a pick-six that put the exclamation point on the Knights’ 56-42 homecoming victory.
Red Devils’ late Homecoming rally falls short
On a night that saw both teams offer each other plenty of opportunities, Richmond left just enough openings to allow South Dearborn to escape Lyboult Field with a 21-19 win. Although South Dearborn played spoiler at the Richmond football Homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 11, Red Devils coach Maurice Hibbler saw glimpses of what he believes his team can be. A strong start. Stretches of dominance on defense. A decided advantage in most categories on the stat sheet.
Knights match 4A opponent before falling late
Northeastern’s 2A football team stepped up two enrollment classes and matched 4A Delta play-for-play for 36 minutes in its home game played on the Knights field on Friday, Sept. 4. The fourth quarter, however, favored the larger school as the Eagles outlasted the Knights on a warm, muggy evening. The teams entered the final period tied at 14-14, but Delta scored on back-to-back drives to open the fourth quarter and went on to win the preview of future Eastern Crossroads Conference members.
Knights 3-peat as champs
Macey Oler’s score was the first number posted to the leaderboard, and it stood up for the rest of the day to earn her medalist honors and help lift Northeastern to the Wayne County girls golf championship for the third consecutive year. Northeastern posted a team score of 418 on a par-72 layout at Highland Lake Golf Course, which has recovered nicely from the catastrophic rainfall that hit the area earlier this month. Hagerstown (476) slid past Centerville (483) for second place Aug. 29.
Lincoln laments missed opportunities at Union County
This wasn’t the Lincoln team that Golden Eagles coach Chad Bowman sees working hard every day in practice and working hard to help rebuild the community. “That’s not them,” Bowman said after the quiet postgame huddle that followed Lincoln’s 49-6 loss at Union County on Friday, Aug. 28. “I know in my heart that’s not them, and the coaching staff knows that’s not them. I love these boys to death, but I’m very disappointed how that turned out today.
‘Dogs deliver big plays, big win in season opener
The big-play Centerville Bulldogs got unleashed and brought home an opening-night win over Winchester on Friday, Aug. 21, at Craig Field. Centerville treated its home fans to an evening chock-full of chunk plays in a 47-12 victory. “We had a great first quarter, started fast and then struggled a little bit in the second quarter. It was important for us to regroup at halftime and execute the game plan and do exactly what we were expecting,” said Bulldogs coach Ryan Cole.
A queer Catholic’s encounter with violence—and grace—at Communion
Outreach Original Kyle Wright / August 18, 2026 Print this: Communion of the apostles with bread, fresco from Gračanica monastery (c. 1321). (Wikimedia Commons.) Years before I became Catholic, I spent time discerning with an Anglican monastic community. One of their 49 rules focused on the practice of receiving Communion. In a community where the Eucharist was received almost daily, the concern was not whether people would come forward—but whether the act might begin to feel routine. Familiar.
Between A Skunk And A Hard Place - LIFE & LAND
by Kyle Wright Like most hunters, I’ve had my fair share of intense moments in the turkey woods, including the first time I ever laid eyes on a longbeard. Like most hunters, I’ve had my fair share of intense moments in the turkey woods, including the first time I ever laid eyes on a longbeard. Dad and I had been calling all morning and we hadn’t heard a single gobble. We were walking back to the truck, hanging our heads and licking our wounds, when we heard a bird behind us.
Kyle Wright Austin Riley Eddie Rosario Atlanta Braves Washington Nationals
ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Wright didn't exactly feel sluggish, just not quite on top of his game. Even so, his performance, which Wright said was just “OK," was good enough to move him closer to 20 wins. “The more times I can go out there and pitch as long as I can, however long that may be, and hopefully give us chance to win — that’s what I think I’m the most proud of," he said.
Kyle Wright Ronald Acuna Jr. Austin Riley Atlanta Braves beat Colorado Rockies
ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Wright pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his major league-leading 17th victory, Austin Riley and Ronald Acuña Jr. homered, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Wednesday night. Wright broke a tie with Houston's Justin Verlander and Tony Gonsolin of the Los Angeles Dodgers to take the lead in wins. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool how quickly it’s turned around," Wright said.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy: The Scope Bite
There are seven venomous snakes in my home state of Oklahoma – the copperhead, the cottonmouth and five different species of rattlesnake. A successful strike from any one of the seven and you’re in for a long weekend – if you’re close to the truck, that is. If you happen to be in the deep woods when a strike hits home, you probably ought to go ahead and make peace with your Maker. Thankfully, each of these snakes is easy to identify and avoid.
It’s a Sin to Kill a Mockingbird...Or Is It?
After poring over a topographic map all winter, I finally drew my X on an out-of-the-way piece of public land. It was going to be a heckuva hike in, but I didn’t have much choice. The turkey numbers on the private land I had permission to hunt had been declining for years so I was having to get creative. Opening afternoon of the spring season found me standing in the spot I’d marked wondering what in the world I was going to do next; the terrain was much too thick for turkey.

Bearing Burdens in My Hunting Journal
It doesn’t always happen on the first sit. Sometimes it takes a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks. One year, my kids were picking out their Halloween costumes before it happened, but I generally feel it before fall’s first frost. Peace. Perspective. I climb into a tree, clip the strap of my safety harness into its carabiner, and the worries of my world just slough off like a second skin. This year, it took longer than it ever has before to find that peace.
How MLB's Sticky Substance Crackdown Affects Fantasy Baseball
Published: Jun 07, 2021 Major league baseball played through a pandemic, produced a World Champion and continues tweaking its rules under new commissioner, Rob Manfred. However, with run production trending down along with batting averages and strikeout rates spiking, do pitchers own an inherent advantage due to foreign substances?
Fantasy Baseball Week That Was & Will Be: Manaoh Stands Out
Alek Manoah bursting on to the scene highlights the Week That Was and Will Be. Player Blurbs Alek Manoah: Alek Manoah made quite an impression this week mowing down the Yankees on the way to his first MLB win. Manoah tossed six innings of shutout ball, striking out seven while giving up just two hits and two walks. With a mid 90s heater, nasty slider and confidence in the change, Manoah will be giving hitters fits for some time. The only question is how many innings the Jays will let him throw.
That Dog’ll Hunt: Best Bird Dog Names
Naming a dog is serious business. Naming a bird dog, more serious still. There are so many subtleties to consider when christening a canine that a man often needs help doing it. An anonymous pup is usually good for a solid week’s worth of argument at the local coffee shop.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Advice: April 4
Hitters Raimel Tapia (COL) I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Tapia, especially in points leagues where he strikes out much more than he walks, and he just hasn’t showcased a ton of power. However, something can be said for a guy hitting leadoff in Coors Field, which we have seen early on in the season.
2021 MLB Draft Guide Player Profile: Alex Colome
It's tough to quantify the relief pitcher market when Alex Colomé recorded 12 saves in 21 outings last year with a 0.81 ERA and 0.94 WHIP over 22.1 innings of work. Of course, with more teams going the way of an analytical approach to high leverage, closers may be a dying breed. His 16:8 K:BB in these innings along with a 4.44 SIERA might contribute to their aversion giving Colomé a large contract entering his Age-32 season.
MLB Shortened Season Strategy: Trade Deadline Fallout
Entering game play on Tuesday, each team will have finished at least half of their season, except the Cardinals. With the only trade deadline in the rear view mirror, teams may not add to their roster for the postseason outside of its own 60-man pool adding intrigue to the rest of this sprint.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Advice: August 8
Sorry this article is later than normal! I got caught up in a ton of NASCAR content and had to edit some videos earlier this morning as well. Better late than never, right? And I also have the benefit of some late-ish news breaking on Saturday to introduce some new blood into this article.
KBO Round Up: June 19
Amidst a wild slate of games on Friday morning, the NC Dinos placed star catcher Eui-ji Yang on the injured list after he experienced vertigo. Remember, the KBO does not require a player to spend a certain amount of time on the injury list so Yang can return to action when healthy. For now his backup Tae-goon Kim makes for an intriguing low priced option at catcher going forward.
Fantasy Baseball Position Preview - Outfielders in New Places to Buy
Of course we never know what will happen when a player moves to a new team, city, and home ballpark, but here are six outfielders with new homes that are likely on their way up. Nick Castellanos , CIN: Stock UP Castellanos had a completely dominant second half after being traded from Detroit to Chicago in 2019. His time with the Cubs saw him bat .302 with 19 homeruns and 46 RBI, and now he will be hitting in an even more power-friendly home ballpark in Cincinnati.
Fantasy Baseball Daily Round Up: August 15
During a day which featured some rough outings by starting pitchers, Trevor Bauer (nine earned runs in 4.1 innings) and Cole Hamels (eight earned runs against in two innings), boring old Clayton Kershaw turned in his 21st consecutive start of at least six innings. Kershaw started the game striking out the first seven batters he faced and his 10 strikeouts can be seen here: Clayton Kershaw, 10Ks in 20 Seconds.
Fantasy Baseball The Week That Was: August 12
Aristides Aquino , OF CIN: Well, not only does he have a cool name, but Aquino can back it up. In his first week in the show, Double-A hit a robust .500 with six home runs and a ridiculous 1,900+ OPS. Yes, you read that correctly – his OPS is over 1,900. Of course, he will not remain this hot, but there is plenty of reason for optimism. Cincinnati is a great place to hit over the summer. Moreover, this is a guy who blasted 28 home runs in fewer than 300 Triple-A at-bats this year.
Fantasy Baseball Category Impact: ERA/WHIP
Published: Jun 07, 2019 Members of #FANation spoke up and this week, we are looking to lower our fantasy team’s earned run average (ERA) and WHIP. Hey, I’m right there in the trenches with you, as I should probably heed my own advice and find some ways to improve my pitching staff. There are four pitchers below, as well as a handful of honorable mentions that you should contemplate about adding to your staff.
Scoping Out The Burris Optics Factory. Eye-opening!
I recently took Burris Optics up on their slogan Find What Matters, and made a visit to their factory in Greeley, Colorado, to find out what matters to them. When I learned that Burris is headquartered less than an hour’s drive from my in-laws’ house where we’d be celebrating Christmas, I sent an email asking about a tour. Angie Straka, the Administrative and Facilities Supervisor, said she’d be glad to show me around and we quickly settled on a date and time.
The Wind Blows - Sporting Classics Daily
It was at my family’s annual campout during Oklahoma’s black powder season one year that I developed my disdain for the cold. The air mattress I’d been sharing with my oldest brother sprung a leak in the night and when we woke up he was practically on top of me. “Hey, Kerry, do you mind rolling over a bit?” “Ungh,” he grunted. “Which way?” I guess he was cold, too. But winter’s cold shoulder isn’t the only manifestation of Mother Nature’s mood swings I’ve learned to dislike.
Long Live the King
For seven summers, the king enjoyed the adoration of his subjects, the ladies of his court literally fawning before him. His graying cape was stretched stately across his regal shoulders, and the crown atop his head was adorned with sixteen ivory tipped points. From the muddy red banks of the Cimarron River to snaking State Highway 51, he walked the length and breadth of his kingdom with an air of absolute authority, an entourage of lesser dignitaries trailing in his wake.
The Magic Hour - Sporting Classics Daily
The sun is setting on a brilliant hunting career. Though his big game hunting bag isn’t particularly mixed, it is well stocked. A couple of pronghorn antelope, one empty elk tag. Maybe a hundred deer across a forty-year career, many of which were bagged when whitetails were much harder to come by than they are now. Trophies were well and truly earned in the dawn of his career, back when even seeing a deer was cause for celebration.
Mournful Echoes - Sporting Classics Daily
A trip to a private parcel, though, turned up a pair of birds. Unfortunately, they were strung up by their necks and hanging on either side of a tree branch, connected by a leather thong that might’ve been a bootlace. Judging by the sight of their bloated heads and the smell of their decaying flesh, they’d been there a few days so I didn’t get close enough to confirm my bootlace hypothesis.
Taking Aim - Sporting Classics Daily
Every other article I read these days first prophesies the death of hunting and then offers easy to follow instructions on how to interest your child – or someone else’s – in the outdoors. Until recently, I’ve paid little attention to these articles. Nearly three years ago, I was named the winner of Blaser’s and Sporting Classics’ Short Story Contest (sportingclassicsdaily.com/winner-blaser-contest). The contest’s writing prompt was, “Hunting has a future because . .
A Little Daisy Can Pack Powerful Memories
When the sweet little lady behind the counter handed me the medallion, it all came rushing back to me. Inscribed on its face, just below three engraved rifles, was the phrase, “My first gun was a Daisy.” Those words triggered a memory so pure and sweet I was shocked it’d ever been buried. I remember watching cartoons in the living room, lounging in my dad’s easy chair, when I heard the front door open. Mom and dad had run to Walmart, but I had no idea for what.
Ode to the Check-In Station
Hunting, for me, is about spending a good time alone, about reorienting myself to the world around me. But it’s also about communing with those we meet in the wider world, about conversations and connections with our fellow man. An important part of that camaraderie was the check-in station, a part of the hunting culture that is, regrettably, dwindling in this age of digital and telephone tag-punching. The move toward easier harvest reporting was inevitable, I suppose.
There's a Snake in My Blind
Anticipation for hunting season always has me sweating through at least a couple of early archery hunts, but I feel much more comfortable with a rifle in my hands, so it was with high hopes that I made my way to the woods on opening afternoon of Oklahoma’s black-powder season last year. I’d hunted that morning and seen several deer, but nothing big enough to bring my muzzleloader to the shooting sticks.
What's in a Memory?
Like many hunters, I depend on the successes of spring to get me through summer. The memory of a dewy April morning often eases the misery of a scorching August afternoon. I killed a turkey this year, but it wasn’t much of a hunt and therefore isn’t much of a memory. Three toms with three distinctly colored heads marched by in formation at 45 yards, no thanks to my calling or decoying. I just happened to be set up behind the right fallen log.
When They Just Won't Shut Up
“Eastern turkeys are like men and Rios are like women.” When I asked my friend who lives in the southeastern part of Oklahoma what he meant by that, he said, “Easterns won’t talk and Rios never shut up.” I’ve heard it several times since: Rio Grande turkeys are easy to kill and Eastern turkeys just don’t gobble. But that sure wasn’t my experience. Truth be told, I was tired of turkey hunting that spring.
Short Story Contest Winner Visits Blaser Factory
Note: Kyle Wright was announced as the winner of Blaser’s and Sporting Classics’ “Why hunting has a future” Short Story Contest in December 2015. Last month he traveled to Isny, Germany, for a special tour of the Blaser, Mauser, and J.P. Sauer factories. To read his winning submission, click here. Waidmannsheil! In the German language it means something like “hunter’s luck,” and though I can’t pronounce it, I’m apparently full of it.
