During Flock’s nationwide controversy over personal privacy concerns and mass surveillance technology, the university has 15 Flock cameras and continues to utilize them. The university installed its Flock cameras on the Denton campus and two on the Frisco campus in January of 2023 in order to assist with police investigations. Flock has come under fire due to ethics and mass surveillance concerns, leading some students to question its place on campus.

Denton community organizations hosted a town hall at the Emily Fowler Library discussing artificial intelligence data centers and its effect on local communities. The community event, hosted by Denton’s Democratic Socialists of America, Denton County Green Party and Dallas-Fort Worth’s chapter of Revolutionary Front, discussed data center advances in Denton and ways the community could take action against data centers.

During the July 14 meeting, Denton City Council discussed a zoning change in a residential neighborhood to adjust a zone to accommodate four duplexes instead of a single-family residence on three-fourths of an acre. A lot on the northeast corner of Taliaferro and Bolivar Street attempted to change zoning in order to allow for eight duplexes instead of the single-family units allowed under the current medium lot Residential 3 zone.
