Few places draw more mixed opinions than California. My trusty spreadsheet dug into a Clever Real Estate poll about what people think of all 50 states, and sure enough, California is as divisive as ever. Pollsters asked 1,000 Americans to rate each state on five things: how desirable it is, or not, whether it’s underrated or misunderstood, and how good it looks. Most “best places to live” scorecards use economic and demographic statistics to compare how livable each state is.

LA-Orange County’s worst-paying jobs: Can those wages pay the rent?

The smallest paychecks in the job market covering Los Angeles and Orange counties would barely cover typical rents, leaving little for other bills. My trusty spreadsheet looked at a curious federal study of employment and wages across 22 occupations, regardless of the industry in which those jobs are performed. The latest stats are for May 2025. For perspective on an occupation’s buying power, those wages were compared with what a typical apartment costs in L.A.-Orange County.
