The lies we tell ourselves
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” The above is an iconic line from the iconic movie “The Princess Bride.” Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) wryly says it to Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) after he — Vizzini — has uttered the word “inconceivable” several times.

For gardeners who have been itching to get outside and tackle the therapeutic winter job of pruning their roses — you can stop sharpening your secateurs and start pruning. Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content After last week’s cold, frosty mornings and a run of cold, cloudy days, roses should now be dormant enough to prune.
“If you can keep it.”
As I think about the U.S. commemorating our 250th anniversary, I am consumed with substantially more questions than answers, from the philosophical, to the existential, to the practical: What does it mean to establish a nation based on an idea — or an ideal? Will America endure another 250 years? What is a patriot? That last question is particularly vexing in part because nobody gets to decide the answer. Or, more specifically, literally everyone gets to decide the answer.

A troubling set of challenges is unfolding in Indiana — one boy and young man at a time. As we document in new research commissioned by the Sagamore Institute, boys and men in Indiana are falling behind in educational achievement, mental health and workforce participation at alarming rates. Many of them also are struggling with loneliness and hopelessness. It’s a major reason why the suicide rate among men in Indiana is four times higher than among women.
Comment: The missing half of the addiction story
A commentary by a retired chiropractor who lives in Parksville. He is the author of Johnnie and Me and the upcoming novel 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy. Re: An overdose of grief: Ten years into the crisis, the toxic-drug toll continues to mount It is a tragedy. People are dying, real people, with families, stories, and lives that mattered long before they became statistics. Articles like this remind us of that, and they should. The grief described is real, profound, and impossible to ignore.
Opinion: Voices of recovery are needed in the toxic drug crisis conversation
The recent coverage on the reversal of decriminalization raises an important question that is still missing from this conversation: where is recovery? The roundtable itself was, by any measure, an impressive one, bringing together senior policymakers, health officials, and academic voices to reflect on a decade of the toxic drug crisis. And yet, reading through it, I was left with a simple question: Was there anyone at that table who had actually recovered from addiction?

I just want to go home
Indianapolis has a long history of major tensions between law enforcement officers and African Americans, especially boys and young men. For example, anyone who is in their fifties or older will recall the case of Michael Taylor in 1987. Taylor, who at 16 years old was just a year younger than I was, died while handcuffed in the back of a police car. The official report says that he had hidden a gun in his shoe, which accidentally discharged and killed him.

Welcome to the jungle
Allow me to begin with an admission. Namely, I feel somewhat guilty about writing this column. My ambivalence has nothing to do with any reticence regarding the subject matter per se. Rather, it has to do with the fact that the subject matter was likely propagated as an intentional effort to distract the American people from the latest tranche of the Epstein files. Those files mention President Trump roughly 38,000 times.

Kodak Camera Winter
The Kodak camera was more than just a birthday gift. It brought a new outlook for a pre-teen boy. Larry D. Smith shares his memory. A simple film camera changed the way I saw the world. As best I can remember, it was my 11th or 12th birthday. Since my birthday falls on December 31st – New Year’s Eve – it had always felt like a big deal. Every year, my parents would host a gathering, filling our home with family, laughter, games, and the clinking of celebratory glasses.

Go ahead, make my day
Democrats finally opened up to a shutdown. Historically, they have avoided that eventuality at all costs. Times have apparently changed, driven by the fact that a substantial portion of their base is on board with this stance. Some might even argue that Democrats have advanced along the evolutionary chain; they’re now vertebrates. Having foregone a “clean CR” (Continuing Resolution) in favor of getting politically dirty, Democrats have drawn a clear line in the sand. Or have they?

What does it mean to be pro-life?
As a pro-life Evangelical Christian, I have had innumerable discussions over the years regarding abortion. My position tends not to be popular with either those who are pro-choice or with my fellow pro-lifers. Why is that the case? First, I believe that life begins at conception.

Political Violence in America
A gunman attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump last Saturday. Regardless of the shooter’s motive, I will state unequivocally that this act of political violence is unacceptable. There are few things on which most Americans agree; zero tolerance for this heinous act should be on that list.
The Cost of Free Speech
It is fair to say that Salman Rushdie, the widely celebrated author, is one of the world’s foremost champions of free speech. Rushdie, who is perhaps best known for his novel “The Satanic Verses,” has sacrificed and suffered more for his craft than the vast majority of his fellow scribes. First, he survived a fatwa (an Islamic legal judgment) from Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini.
The perils of progress
I spent the majority of my childhood living a stone’s throw from 34th and Emerson. For the uninitiated, that area is one of the myriad Indianapolis enclaves that are usually referred to, without malice aforethought, as “the inner city”. The area is sometimes referred to, somewhat more benignly, as “the near east side”. It is also referred to, more pejoratively, as “the hood”.
The more things change
As far back as I can remember – which is quite a few decades at this point – I have heard the following lament (framed as a rhetorical question) from white people: “Why is everything about race?” The evil twin sister of that disingenuous interrogative is the following spurious accusation: “Black people are always playing the race card.” The exceedingly self-evident answer both to the question and to the accusation is that race is inextricably intertwined with the fabric of American society.
Point of View: Exxon Valdez oil spill brought out local heroes
When the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound 35 years ago, and the spilled oil spread into the Gulf of Alaska, then up into Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay, local people sprang to respond long before Exxon provided any help.
Crime and (no) punishment
Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev resigned on Christmas Day 1991. Soon thereafter, the Soviet Parliament dissolved itself. Those events had a profound and lasting effect on a young KGB officer named Vladimir Putin. Putin’s hurt and embarrassment has never dissipated, either in his head or in his heart. This blow to his pride would be utterly irrelevant were it not for the fact that he is now a megalomaniacal, homicidal would-be despot who presides over a vast nuclear arsenal.

Get in where you fit in
In his autobiography, the legendary Groucho Marx wrote about an incident in which he resigned from a prestigious social club: “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.” I note Marx’s quip as I consider the myriad attacks on Ivy League schools and other so-called “woke” institutions. In particular, I find it strange that so many people who condemn these institutions – whose political ethos is the antithesis of theirs – desperately want to join them.
Winter Weather Cancels Classes

Medicare Scammers Continue to Try and Steal
Seniors need to be reminded Medicare scammers are as determined as ever to steal money and personal information. Watch out for these common scams. Fraudulent marketing. According to the Federal Trade Commission, there are limits on how companies and agents selling Medicare plans can contact you and what they can say. Examples follow: - You should never get a phone call from a company you don't have a relationship with. - A company must not represent itself as Medicare, Social Security, or Medicaid.
When the shooting stopped
After six months of savage fighting, soldiers on both sides were firmly ensconced in their respective trenches. Bullets had incessantly rifled through the air. Planes rained hellfire from above. Masses of bodies lay strewn along the battlefield, falling where warriors had succumbed to the cruel truth of their mortality. The living prayed for relief. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the weapons of war fell silent. Against all rational expectation, a spontaneous truce had begun.
President Biden and the Black Vote
When it comes to the way in which African Americans are likely to vote in the 2024 presidential election, history suggests that President Joe Biden should be confident. To begin, more than 80% of African Americans identify as Democrats. Of that group, at least 87% have voted for the Democratic nominee in every presidential election since 2000 – though that number has steadily declined since 2012. Most polls found that President Biden garnered roughly 90% of the Black vote in 2020.
