Krizek, Morefield and Aird: Allowing local opt-out on retail cannabis is opting into the illicit market
Since the legalization of adult-use cannabis in 2021, lawmakers have sent two conflicting messages to Virginians: cannabis is legal to possess, but we won’t give you any legal way to buy it. Four years ago, when the General Assembly took the long-awaited step of acknowledging that adults should not be criminalized for cannabis use, we did so without the health, safety and economic framework to make legalization work.
Commentary: For more equitable mental health care, start with local hospitals
Picture this: You’re in the midst of a mental health crisis, and you don’t know where to turn for help. Friends and family are unavailable, out of reach, or not equipped to support you. You may even have serious preexisting mental health conditions that you aren’t aware of. Public services may be difficult for you to understand, and — without strong proficiency in English — impossible to navigate.
Commentary: Riverside Regional Jail needs competent leadership — now
There is a crisis of leadership at Riverside Regional Jail. With the departure of Superintendent Larry Leabough, there is also an opportunity to chart a new course, if we are willing to invest in it. Virginia: City council selects Cordish as preferred casino vendor for Petersburg project
Virginia’s city of Petersburg unanimously chose The Cordish Companies on Wednesday to build a casino should voters approve the move in a referendum. Ward 5 Councilor Howard Myers, who made the motion to go with Cordish and BSE’s $1.4 billion proposal for 92 acres off Wagner Road in south Petersburg, said in an email to The Progress-Index that he was “ecstatic about the potentially transformative opportunities” stemming from the proposal.
Virginia: Petersburg added to the list of eligible places for a casino
Virginia’s city of Petersburg has been added to the list of places eligible for a casino after Governor Glenn Youngkin accepted the move on Wednesday. SB 628, sponsored by Senator Lashrecse Aird, was passed 80-19 with an amendment that removes the reenactment clause. This means the General Assembly opened a path for residents to vote on a referendum to have casino gaming in the city as soon as this November.
Our proposal for a secretary of rural affairs: Why our bill is needed to meet the needs of rural Virginia
Readers of this paper know all too well that rural regions of our commonwealth are in desperate need of help. For many years, elected officials on both sides of the aisle have made efforts to help rural Virginia; but for just as many years, those efforts, however well intended, have been too little, too fragmented, and, in some cases, too late.
Thank you for helping me defeat Virginia's last anti-choice Democrat
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the Daily Kos community for their unwavering support throughout my primary election. From day one, I knew this was going to be a grassroots effort. It was never going to be easy to defeat a sitting State Senator, and I knew that in order to be effective, I would need to bring together a coalition of grassroots supporters based on our shared values.

Throughout this General Assembly session there have been moments I’ve been proud of the policies we’ve adopted and moments I’ve been disappointed in some stances we’ve taken and by the bills that have moved forward. But as a member of the Appropriations committee — and particularly the Elementary and Secondary Education subcommittee — I’m proud of the bipartisan worked we did together to ensure that our spending priorities reflect the needs of my district and our entire commonwealth.Thursday,...
