In my backyard, outside Atlanta, I have been fighting fire ants. Anyone who has lived in the South knows you don’t prune a fire-ant problem, you kill the nest. Ignore one, and it becomes a dozen. I keep thinking about that as I watch what is happening to voting rights across this region, and how those with the resources to fight back have chosen, again, to look away. For more than 30 years, I have organized in this region. We knew the assault on the vote was not hypothetical. It was always the plan.

I have organized Black voters in the South for over thirty years. The question I get asked most (in barbershops, church basements, on porches, in the DMs) is the same one, in different words, every time. Why should Black folks even vote? I understand the frustration. It is valid. We have felt betrayed by a system that has not protected us from mass firings, attacks on civil rights, and the unraveling of so much we fought for. The disillusionment is earned.
