I recently got invited by a PR contact to an ‘unsanctioned race’ hosted by two brands and a running crew. My first thought was: have they sent this to the right person? Unsanctioned races are grassroots events, usually organised by run crews rather than official race bodies, with no chip timing, no goodie bag and often no route revealed until the last minute. They sit outside the traditional race calendar deliberately – that’s the point - and they’re pretty cool.

There’s a reason I’ve done more spring marathons than autumn ones in recent years. Training through the summer is no joke. I will take rain, flooding and below-freezing temperatures for the majority of my training block over hot weather every single time. At least when it’s cold you can add another layer. Obviously summer training has its advantages: the longer days are nice, and often you can get some brilliant early morning or evening runs in.
