FIFA accuses UEFA of 'smear campaign' in forcing document handover about World Cup investor plan
FIFA HAS ACCUSED UEFA of a “smear campaign” and a “fishing expedition” after European football’s governing body asked US judges to force it to hand over documents related to its failed World Cup investor plan. Global soccer body FIFA’s divisive plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to investors, unveiled in July, triggered a huge backlash across the sport, with UEFA threatening to boycott the World Cup unless the plan was scrapped.

PADRAIC JOYCE HAS stepped down as Galway senior football manager after seven seasons in charge. Galway GAA announced the departure this evening with Joyce having been in the Tribesmen hotseat since October 2019. He won four Connacht senior titles in succession as manager between 2022 and 2025, while also guiding Galway to the 2022 and 2024 All-Ireland senior finals, losing out to Kerry and Armagh respectively.
Back to school costs €700 for a school iPad? That’s not free education
A PARENT DESCRIBED the start of the school year to me recently. Her daughter was beginning first year, which should have been an exciting milestone for the whole family. Instead, they found themselves trying to work out how they were going to pay roughly €700 for the iPad package she needed for school. On top of the cost, there was the job of setting it up, navigating unfamiliar software and trying to understand a system they had never used before.
Tech dubbed 'creepy' AI smart glasses are here, but our privacy laws have not caught up
ACROSS IRELAND AND most recently in Cork, concerns have been raised about people being filmed using AI-powered smart glasses without their consent. While wearable technology is developing rapidly and offers exciting possibilities, these incidents highlight why Ireland needs a more serious conversation about privacy, consent and regulation before this technology becomes more widespread.
Bessborough planning row Preserve this site - we cannot concrete over Ireland's shameful past
THIS MONTH, PLANNING permission was granted for a 140-bed apartment complex at Bessborough Mother and Baby Home in Cork. More than 900 babies are thought to have died at this site, with burial records in existence for 64. This project’s reaching completion would cut off access to answers for those affected by this institution. A full excavation of human remains has never been conducted.
Ireland must stand united against hate in all its forms
IN RECENT WEEKS, Ireland has witnessed a deeply troubling rise in hate-fuelled attacks – from racist assaults to homophobic violence. Each incident is a stark reminder that racism and hate have no place in our country. Following last weekend’s shocking attack on Cork drag performers Krystal Queer and Lucina Schynning, we must face an uncomfortable truth: Ireland’s proud image as a welcoming nation is under real strain, and words of solidarity alone will not be enough to stop this rise in hate.
we need a promise that fees won't increase
This week has been nothing short of a disaster for students and their families. In the space of 48 hours, government policy on student fees lurched from one extreme to another—leaving thousands of students and their families confused, anxious, and angry. Last Sunday, Fianna Fáil’s Minister James Lawless, stated clearly and without qualification that student fees would increase to €3,000 in September with a previously applied discount now removed..
Why we need an outdoor swimming pool for Cork
The Lee Baths closed in 1986, the same year I was born. So many Cork people have fond memories and stories of the baths, which were a big part of Cork city and remained open for 54 years. It’s such a pity that Cork city hasn’t had an outdoor swimming facility to match it since then. A whole generation of us missed out on this experience, but it’s not too late for us yet - and it is certainly not too late to secure it for the next generation.
Housing must be a No.1 Budget priority
WE can see the failings of Government housing policies very clearly. We have 12,847 people who are homeless, including almost 4,000 children. According to Cork Simon Community, there were 519 adults depending on emergency accommodation in Cork during the last week of, July 2023 - up 5.7% in 12 months. These figures do not include people sleeping on couches, people in refuges or direct provision, or the young adults who have no choice but to live with their parents.
Make no mistake - the drinks industry cares about sales, not you
IMAGINE A WORLD without alcohol sponsorship of sport and without drinks ads on TV. You’re imagining France, the country with a binge drinking rate one sixth that of Ireland. It’s a country where there is a genuinely sensible and mature approach to alcohol – and it’s a country, like Ireland, with a mix of statutory and non-statutory regulations for the alcohol industry.
