Abstract The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has opened a new era in the study of rocky exoplanets, enabling direct characterization of their surfaces with mid-infrared spectroscopy. Different types of rock have distinct spectral features that are diagnostic of the chemical composition and other physical properties like surface texture. Measurements of these features can provide valuable clues about a planet’s geologic history and interior processes.

In four years, NASA’s Psyche mission will arrive at asteroid 16 Psyche, a mysterious metallic-type (or M-type) asteroid that will be the first of its kind to be visited by a space mission. Observations of 16 Psyche’s surface suggest that it is highly metal-rich, but the bulk density of the asteroid is inconsistent with being totally made of metal.
