Mapping cherry blossoms in ArcGIS Pro and Map Viewer

Cherry blossom season is fast approaching in Washington, D.C., with the projected peak bloom at the end of March – early April, according to the National Park Service. What better way to prepare than make maps of cherry blossom trees! At FedGIS I presented in the ArcGIS Pro: Mapping and Visualization session with Valeria Chavez, and demoed a map of cherry blossom trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. But cherry blossoms appear throughout D.C., not just the Tidal Basin.

Revisiting Color Schemes: Always Room for Improvement

Last year I published a blog post that featured a map of a snow storm, using a continuous color scheme I designed in ArcGIS Pro. At the time, I was really excited about this color ramp, with its bright magenta and turquoise. About a week after I published the blog, I realized I never checked the map to make sure the color scheme was legible for different color vision deficiencies. Rookie mistake. I circled back to my project in ArcGIS Pro and used the Color Vision Deficiency Simulator tool.

Mapping Happiness in Three Acts

ArcGIS Blog In July, I presented at the Esri User Conference for the first time, alongside my talented colleagues Ken Field and John Nelson for the ArcGIS: Designing Thematic Maps session. During the session, we each made three maps using the same dataset. We highlighted different thematic mapping approaches and provided tips and critiques for our own maps along the way. For all of our maps, we visualized themes in the World Happiness Report.
