On a quiet street on the outskirts of Mexia sits a modest, two-story white house. It’s in obvious need of repair: the paint is chipping and the eaves are collapsing. Lipman’s a longtime journalist, originally from Mexia herself, who helped start a foundation to preserve the story of the town’s most prominent celebrity: singer and songwriter, Cindy Walker. While she may not be a household name, Walker’s fame lies with the ubiquity of her songs.
