The View From Both Sides of Pocket Aces
January 15, 2020 Lee Jones I have a hand to share, and a poker lesson to go along with it. It was at that Choctaw casino in Oklahoma I was telling you about a few days ago. Pocola, if you're in the neighborhood. Like any $1/$2 no-limit hold'em game, anywhere on the planet. I had started with $400 and it was $415-ish when the hand broke out.

My mother-in-law lives in Fort Smith, Arkansas — a state which has (or had until recently) minimal legal gambling. But Fort Smith sits hard on the Oklahoma border, and there's a Choctaw casino that's, well, closer to her house than the movie theater downtown.

A couple of folks chose not to straddle when they won, but somebody would always volunteer to grab the straddle button.

PokerSimple: Episode 1 - Value Betting the Turn
September 18, 2019 Tommy AngeloLee Jones A "value bet" is a bet made "for value," meaning the person doing the betting wants the opponent to call the bet, unlike in the case of a bluff when the player betting desires a fold. This first episode of PokerSimple is about value betting on the turn, which gets dicey when you have only one pair, but it's the best hand, meaning there's value to be had, if you know when and why to pull the trigger. That's the opening topic.
Positioning Yourself for Success
September 03, 2019 Lee Jones I played $3/$5 no-limit hold'em for six hours last night. This is the most interesting hand from the session. There was a $10 straddle, two people limped in front of me in the hijack position, and I raised to $50 with . It folded back to the original straddler, who called, as did the two limpers. So we had a $200 pot and the flop came . Everybody checked to me. You can make an argument for betting eights here — they're sometimes the best hand.
