History: What You Need to Know About May Day. International Workers Day - Global Research
[First published in 2010. The legacy of the late Leo Panitch lives.] For more than 100 years, May Day has symbolized the common struggles of workers around the globe. Why is it largely ignored in North America? The answer lies in part in American labour’s long repression of its own radical past, out of which international May Day was actually born a century ago. The seeds were sown in the campaign for the eight-hour work day.

To renew working class resistance, the labour movement must be democratized
Since its initial publication in 1988, From Consent to Coercion: The Continuing Assault on Labour by Bryan Evans, Carlo Fanelli, Don Swartz, and the late, Leo Panitch has offered leftists an exhaustive history of the onslaughts against trade union rights and freedoms in Canada. The book charts the increasingly brutal setbacks and depredations experienced by organized labour, from the post-war decades to today.

From Consent to Coercion examines the increasing assault against trade union rights and freedoms in Canada by federal and provincial governments. Centring the struggles of Canadian unionized workers, this book explores the diminution of the welfare state and the impacts that this erosion has had on broader working-class rights and standards of living.
To Renew Working-Class Resistance, the Labour Movement Must Be Democratized
Much of what was achieved through the class struggles of the 1930s to 1970s has dissolved. So-called Keynesian capitalism was predicated upon a set of compromises between capital and labour that accepted organized labour as a junior partner in the management of the political economy. Social democracy, as the major political orientation within working-class politics, was instrumental here.

The Making of Global Capitalism with Leo Panitch
The British bombing of Hamburg in 1942, and the American firebombing of Japan in March 1945 that killed as many as 120,000 people in one night, created the conditions for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which were considered mere extensions of the firebombing tactics, says Daniel Ellsberg on Reality Asserts Itself with Paul Jay. Socialist Register 2022: New Polarizations and Old Contradictions: The Crisis of Centrism
Edited by Gregory Albo, Leo Panitch and Colin Leys $29.00 “Polarization” is a word commonly used by everyone from mainstream journalists to the person in the street, whatever their political stripe. But this widely recognized phenomenon deserves scrutiny. The 58th volume of the Socialist Register takes up the challenge, asking such questions as: Are the current tendencies towards polarization new, and if so, what is their significance?
C. B. Macpherson Wanted a Socialism That Didn’t Lose Sight of the Individual
Review of The Political Thought of C.B. Macpherson by Frank Cunningham (Palgrave, 2019). C. B. Macpherson was a legend in Canadian political theory circles, known for his close reading of dense theoretical texts. He managed to bring to light hidden assumptions and tensions with a rare combination of scholarly acumen and bite.
Biden’s Increase in Government Spending Won’t Touch Capitalists’ Power
Joe Biden’s turn to supporting large-scale government spending, after rallying the Democratic Party establishment to defeat Bernie Sanders in the primary, has stunned much of the Left. After signing a $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill, he is now advancing an additional $1.7 trillion infrastructure bill, to be spent over the next eight years. These bills include far more than the base level measures necessary to address the pandemic or to simply repair highways and bridges.

The Marxism of Leo Panitch
Ralph Miliband begins his classic book, Marxism and Politics, with the striking observation that no major figure in the Marxist tradition, including Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels themselves, offered a systematic elaboration of Marxist political theory. For Miliband, this glaring absence could be explained by the ambivalent position Marxists typically assigned to politics in their conceptions of social life in class societies.
The convivial, practical road to socialism: a tribute to Leo Panitch
It is striking that the widespread grief at the untimely death of Leo Panitch is not simply for the passing of a brilliant socialist intellectual but also for the shared personal loss of a warm, kind and truly comradely human being. Leo’s influence has come as much from his spirit of generosity and conviviality as through his arguments. For him the two were inseparable.
Miliband’s masterpiece
Posted Dec 23, 2020 by Leo Panitch Originally published: Tribune (August 6, 2019) | The illusions of the neoliberal era–that the market should or even could be freed from the state, or that an unstoppable process of capitalist globalisation was bypassing even the most powerful of states–have suddenly dissipated. One of the greatest misconceptions of neoliberals was the notion that states and markets were in opposition to each other.

North Winnipeg’s seal of identity
A Glowing Dream: A Memoir Roland Penner J. Gordon Shillingford Publishing, 2007 “The place of childhood provides the seal of identity.” This epigram opens the first chapter of Roland Penner’s memoir, Growing Up ‘Red’ in Winnipeg’s North End. It holds true even for those of us who grew up only “pink” – i.e. whose parents were CCFers rather than Communists, and who as a result never set foot in the Ukrainian Labour Temple at Pritchard and McGregor.
Leo Panitch and the Socialist Project
The death of Leo Panitch has made the world a darker place. His writings have carried us through some of the most difficult periods in the history of the socialist left, as wave after wave of the neoliberal onslaught broke workers’ organizations, serving up one defeat after the next. Leo’s work sustained so many of us during these years, pushing us on and pointing the way through the storm. This was not because he sowed illusions about just how bad things have been.
Empire, socialism and November /w Leo Panitch
Posted Dec 21, 2020 by Leo Panitch Originally published: Socialist Project by Sanjiv Gupta (December 20, 2020) | Sanjiv Gupta interviewed Leo Panitch in early September 2020. They discussed two issues which Panitch has studied and written about for decades. First, whether the pandemic has fundamentally altered the geopolitical balance between the U.S. and other great powers, specifically China. And second, how socialists in the U.S. should approach the November elections.

From New Left to New Labour This trenchant account of the last twenty-five years of the British Labour Party argues that Tony Blair's modernizing tendency was profoundly mistaken in asserting that the only alternative to traditional social democracy and narrow parliamentarianism was an acceptance of neo-liberalism.
Leo Panitch (1945-2020)
The global left has suffered an irreparable loss with the passing of Leo Panitch this weekend. Leo had recently been diagnosed with multiple myelomas and had contracted coronavirus, which developed into viral pneumonia while in the hospital receiving treatment. Leo was born into a family of East European Jewish immigrants in Winnipeg, Canada, and completed his PhD at the London School of Economics under the supervision of Ralph Miliband.
Opinion | The twin legacies of Dan Heap and Tony Benn
By Leo Panitch Tue., May 6, 2014timer3 min. read The death of Dan Heap just a month after Tony Benn brings to mind how much more they had in common than the year of their birth. Their respective allegiances to the NDP and Labour Party, as the traditional electoral home of working class people, were unshakable. Yet they had no illusions that these social democratic parties were themselves very democratic organizations, let alone very interested in socialist ideas.

To challenge global capitalism we must first understand it: an interview with Leo Panitch

Rebuilding banking
First, let’s be clear about capitalism – and with it the character of the state under capitalism. There is a conventional assumption, a leftover of the cold war perhaps, that somehow capitalism is essentially about the market and socialism is essentially about the state.
Labour’s lost leader
I vividly recall a rather sober conversation I had with Tony Benn sometime in the mid-1990s, just as it was becoming clear that social democracy everywhere was accommodating to neoliberalism. We were discussing how broad and profound was the defeat of both trade unionism and the democratic socialist left over the previous decade, when Tony suddenly asked me how long I thought it would take for a revitalised working class and a renewed socialist movement to reemerge.

Beyond Impossible Reform and Improbable Revolution
David Harvey and Leo Panitch are two of the world’s most respected Marxist thinkers. Here, in a spirited conversation for Jacobin, they discuss Harvey’s new book, 17 Contradictions and the End of Capitalism; capital’s relationship to nature; and how to build visionary movements that go beyond just localism. And clash over a few things along the way. David Harvey is professor of anthropology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

The November 2003 issue of Canadian Dimension featured this extensive interview with Jack Layton shortly after he was newly elected as leader of the federal New Democratic Party. Will escaping Americans test Canada’s capacity for sympathy?
By Leo PanitchContributors Mon., Oct. 12, 2020timer4 min. read When Donald Trump was elected in 2016, I started hearing from American friends that they were thinking of migrating to Canada. Sensing that most of them didn’t really mean it, I would joke in response that we would “build a wall and make you pay for it.” And I sometimes reminded them that Canada had more often been the refuge for those escaping the overthrow of reactionary regimes.
Greece’s Golden Dawn Aren’t Just Nazis - They’re Violent Mafiosi, Too
The five-and-a-half-year trial of Greek neo-Nazi organization Golden Dawn will conclude on Wednesday, October 7, when the panel of three judges issues its verdict. The judgement will resonate beyond Greece, where the trial has already played a big role in reversing Golden Dawn’s rise since the start of this decade. The party fell from third place to losing all of its seats in parliament in last year’s election, and it has also suffered a number of splits and defections.

Towards a Democratic Socialism
The great advances made in Marxist state theory over the decade after 1968 did not initially yield clear strategic signposts that would validate Marx’s famous injunction that the point of theory was not just to understand the world but to change it.

A Very British Dystopia After Brexit
Review of The Friends of Harry Perkins by Chris Mullin (Scribner, 2019) Nearly four decades on, Chris Mullin’s 1982 novel A Very British Coup remains a classic piece of leftist fiction and, though billed as “a delicious fantasy” by the Observer, its impact was largely owed to the real world resonance its story carried.
“Patriotism” Is a Dead End for the Left
In October 1965, on the initiative of Britain’s freshly elected Labour government, the Beatles visited Buckingham Palace to receive MBEs from prime minister Harold Wilson. Though surprisingly controversial, the gesture had a certain obvious political logic: if Wilson hoped to become the standard bearer for a “New Britain” and align his party with the emerging ’60s zeitgeist, what better way than to bequeath the Order of the British Empire on Liverpool’s favorite sons?
