2020 - Environmental issues

On Dec. 14, 2020, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter honored the Michigan Advance with the 2020 Environmental Journalism Award — "for the Advance’s outstanding reporting on the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline controversy, and regularly engaging readers with compelling and approachable stories about a controversial pipeline that at any point in time could rupture and create an environmental and economic disaster.”

2020 - Health reporting

In March 2021, the Michigan Advance won the statewide MPA award for “Best coverage of the Coronavirus in Michigan,” which is open to all print publications part of the MPA. Ken Coleman, Susan J. In March 2021, the Michigan Advance was named 2020 Newspaper of the Year in its circulation category by the Michigan Press Association (MPA). The publication took second place for Newspaper of the Year in 2019.
