Runaway Central Park carriage horse crashes, teen passenger in critical condition

A spooked horse broke free from its driver in Central Park Wednesday and smashed into another horse-drawn carriage, leaving an 18-year-old passenger in critical condition, officials said. The animal took off around 3 p.m. before crashing near Tavern on the Green, according to witnesses at the scene. A police spokesperson said the critically injured male passenger was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The toilets of tomorrow are coming to New York City streets later this summer, officials announced Wednesday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office inked a $4 million contract with the Washington, D.C.-based company Throne Labs to install high-tech, solar-powered port-a-potties in 17 busy areas across the five boroughs. The initiative aims to address the city’s long-running shortage of public restrooms. The loos have changing tables and sinks, and are similar in size to conventional bathrooms.

Central Park carriage horse died after eating toxic shrub, examination finds

The carriage horse that collapsed and died in Central Park last week ingested a toxic shrub planted around the park, according to a necropsy shared Tuesday by the union that represents the city’s buggy drivers. The horse, named Deniz, was under the care of carriage driver Nurettin Kirbiyik when he ingested Japanese Yew on the East Drive of the park. Deniz later died as he pulled two passengers around the loop.
