A broadband lithium tantalate-on-silicon nitride heterogeneous modulator for optical and terahertz communications and radar sensing
Abstract Photonic integrated circuits have driven advances in optical interconnects, wireless communications, seamless sensing. Electro-optic modulators, which bridge the electronic and optical domains, act as the cornerstone of these systems.
In situ spectral reconstruction based on a memristor chip for energy-efficient computational spectrometry
Abstract Computational spectrometers, which rely on reconstruction algorithms to decode spectral information from raw sensor data, are of potential use in portable, in-field spectrometry. However, research on such systems primarily focuses on the front-end encoding devices, and back-end decoding hardware remains limited by severe overheads. Here we report an in situ computational spectrometer implemented on a fully integrated 576-Kb memristor chip.
Integrated photonic 3D tensor processing engine - Light: Science & Applications
Abstract Optical computing leverages high bandwidth, low latency, and power efficiency, which is considered as one of the most effective solutions for accelerating deep learning tasks. However, mainstream photonic hardware accelerators are primarily optimized for two-dimensional (2D) matrix-vector multiplications (MVMs).
Integrated Photonics‐Assisted THz Beamformer for Fast Beam Squint‐Free Steering and Wireless Communication
Photonic-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless communication is a promising solution for future high-capacity wireless networks. However, the low output power and severe propagation loss of THz waves limit transmission distance.

Power-efficient polarization-insensitive tunable microring filter on a multi-layer Si3N4-on-SOI platform
We develop and demonstrate a non-duplicate polarization-diversity tunable bandpass optical filter by leveraging the bi-directional transmission of add-drop dual-coupled microring resonators (MRRs) on a multi-layer Si3N4-on-silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By using Euler-bends, we implement compact and low-loss Si3N4 MRRs with an equivalent bending radius of ∼38 µm.
Non‐Volatile Optical Switch Element Enabled by Low‐Loss Phase Change Material
Abstract Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) integrated with phase-change materials have attracted great interest due to their low power consumption and ultra-compact size, which are favored for reconfigurable photonic processors. However, they suffer from a low optical extinction ratio and limited switching cycles due to high material loss and poor reversible repeatability caused by material degradation.
Broadband 32 × 32 Strictly‐Nonblocking Optical Switch on a Multi‐Layer Si3N4‐on‐SOI Platform
Abstract Large-scale silicon optical switches are essential to support the ever-increasing data traffic. Among the various switching architectures, the well-known switch-and-select (S&S) architecture has the advantages of low crosstalk and strict non-blocking. However, it suffers from high path-dependent losses as the waveguide crossings increase dramatically with the number of ports. In this paper, a large-scale 32 × 32 S&S optical switch on a multi-layer Si3N4-on-SOI platform is reported.
Polarization-insensitive 1D unidirectional compact grating coupler for the C-band using a 500 nm SOI
Abstract Grating couplers are an important optical interconnect and have increasingly found their utility in sensing and LIDARs as well. Optical systems in general have been struggling to increase their bandwidths, making polarization insensitivity highly desirable. The standard 220 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform used for integrated photonics suffers from physical bottlenecks in the form of large modal differences in effective refractive index, propagation loss, and dispersion.
Silicon mode-insensitive modulator for TE0 mode and TE1 mode
Abstract Mode-division multiplexing (MDM), which could further increase the capacity and flexibility of the communication systems, has attracted much attention. In this Letter, we demonstrate a proof-of-principle silicon mode-insensitive modulator based on the balanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer that could realize modulation of both TE0 and TE1 modes using a horizontal PN junction.
High-resolution on-chip Fourier transform spectrometer based on cascaded optical switches
Abstract Chip-level spectrometers provide a stable and cost-effective solution for spectral analysis in various applications. Here we present a silicon on-chip digital Fourier transform spectrometer consisting of eight cascaded optical switches connected by delay waveguides. By configuring the states of the optical switches, this chip can realize 127 Mach–Zehnder interferometers with linearly increased optical path differences.
Integrated multi-beam optical phased array based on a 4 × 4 Butler matrix
Abstract We design and demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, silicon-based multi-beam optical phased array (MOPA), incorporating a ${4} \times 4$ Butler matrix beamforming network. The one-dimensional end-fire array consists of 16 emitters at a uniform pitch together with their corresponding phase shifters and is shared among the beams to realize large-scale aliasing-free beam-steering at reduced complexity.
