PennDOT officials are spending the day testing their equipment again, even though Friday's temporary closure of Commercial Street was unplanned. Construction crews, PennDOT officials and other local leaders held a press conference Thursday to provide updates on the project ahead of the July 10 shutdown. Commercial Street closed for second day as PennDOT crews do more testing

PennDOT crews have closed Commercial Street for a second day in a row as they conduct yet another test slide of the new Commercial Street Bridge. PennDOT announced the closure Thursday evening after extending Thursday's closure a few hours. As of Friday, Commercial Street and nearby Forward Avenue are closed between Whipple Street and Summerset Drive from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, PennDOT officials say the road will reopen early if the work is completed ahead of schedule.

With just over two weeks to go until the Parkway East closure, Thursday marked a big day for the historic Commercial Street Bridge Project. At 6 a.m., crews closed Commercial Street, which runs under the bridge, to do a test slide of the new bridge. The roadway, as well as nearby Forward Avenue and a portion of Nine Mile Run Trail, will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. "I mean, it sounds simple to just slide it, but it's a very complex system. So this is really just a test of that system.
