Once again, the Minister of Public Works & Environment, Jaché Adams, is appealing to road users to be patient and careful, as recent rain has carved out and deepened the craters on our public roads. To hear the minister's statement, it sounds like the cause of the pothole problem is the fault of the weather and the need for greater pothole reporting, but that is not the case. The potholes are caused by long-term lack of planning and underinvestment in our highway system.

Bermuda is failing to maintain its infrastructure

In July 2023, former Minister of Public Works David Burch predicted it would cost $100 million over a ten-year period to fully repave half of Bermuda's roads. Almost three years later, it is disturbing to see that for a third consecutive year, only $5 million has found its way into the budget for repaving efforts. This despite the celebratory budgetary surplus, which the Government says is supporting its continuing aggressive roadworks programme.
