My partner and I spent two nights at 25 Captain’s Walk in July, and I was impressed by the high standard. The block itself didn’t  immediately inspire confidence, as the outside was a little tired and the corridor a touch unkempt. But stepping into number 25 revealed a different story. Inside, the one-bedroom apartment was immaculately clean and has a calm, contemporary feel. The furnishings were like new. The bright, airy living space opens onto a furnished balcony with a sea view.

Architectural records from 1668 have unearthed a previously unknown floorplan of a Blackfriars property, now identified to have been owned by Shakespeare. While the discovery resolves several clues in one puzzle, it also unlocks a new and tantalising mystery of its own. Professor Lucy Munro made headlines this spring after uncovering three documents in the London and National Archives that allowed her to pinpoint the exact location and size of Shakespeare’s only London home.
