The 250th anniversary of the country’s founding has come upon us very fast, with hardly any wind up and with considerable dread. This was not the case with the 1976 Bicentennial. That celebration took years to build. It was possible to buy a pair of red white and blue striped Toughskins jeans from the Sears catalog and outgrow them before 1976 even arrived. For several years, every paper cup featured George Washington surrounded by stars. Eagles were everywhere. The Liberty Bell became ubiquitous.
