I love the days where finding whimsy feels easy—where my curiosity is in the driver seat, steering me to the funny, weird things our world is full of. That doesn’t mean I’m doggedly looking for the bright side on those days or running around like a Disney princess singing to forest creatures or anything; I still see the bad stuff. I just see the wonder, too. Then there are the hard days, where I feel like a starving person licking the plate of whimsy for any stray crumb of joy or dollop of humor.

I’ve you’ve read the Necessary Whimsy column before, you know that I consider whimsy to be both a comfort and a weapon. It’s a soft, sparkly rainbow blanket that you can wrap your heart in, and a brick you can throw against hate, injustice, and the seething mass of awful the world chucks at us sometimes. Necessary Whimsy is a Pride parade, full of joy, rainbows, and love, which wouldn’t exist if not for a riot.
