A Massive Contemporary Art Center Just Opened on an Island Outside Paris
Exhibition view of “Imaginary Engine,” at Large - Cultures contemporaines, île Seguin, Boulogne-Billancourt, 2026. Photo: Aurélien Mole A brand new art museum on a once-abandoned island in the middle of the Seine? That was a tantalizing prospect that I had to check out for myself when I was in Paris last week for Art Basel and the attendant events, sandwiched between two weekends of huge protests that riveted the world’s attention (and shortened the fair by two days).
At These Rural Get-Togethers, the Gathering is the Point — and the Art
This article is part of the Fine Arts & Exhibits special section on how the world of art and museums is pushing boundaries. On a sunny Saturday in late September, around one hundred people gathered in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the studio of the artist Mel Chin. The afternoon event was part picnic, part community-building exercise, part homecoming — and part Conceptual artwork in progress.
Elaine de Kooning Gets Her Time in the Spotlight
This article is part of the Fine Arts & Exhibits special section on how the world of art and museums is pushing boundaries. The celebrated artist Alex Katz, who turned 99 this summer, recently recalled a friend and a major figure of the New York art world, Elaine de Kooning. “Elaine was like a myth,” said Katz, best known for his stylized portraits.

Wham! Pow! New York’s Whitney Museum Shows Off Pop Art Master Roy Lichtenstein’s Superpowers
Artist Roy Lichtenstein may have died 29 years ago, but he never really went away. Not only is his particular Pop style indelible, but every artist after him who has used text in a painting or made us look closely at the detritus of low culture to see it anew, owes him a debt. His raised-eyebrow view of life, and of advertising and consumer culture in particular, always feels fresh.
Lee Krasner’s Pioneering Talent Shines in a Joint Show with Jackson Pollock at The Met
Installation view of “Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous,” on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Photo: Anna-Marie Kellen. Courtesy of The Met Something as simple as a single museum exhibition can go on view and then proceed to rewire our brains in an hour or two. The art does not need to be brand new, and the curation does not need to be heavy-handed—the pictures can simply tell a mind-blowing story on their own.

Erwin Wurm plays with volume, scale, and movement—the external metrics of sculpture—to make us think about how much we internally value our material stuff. Do these objects really represent our true selves? What if the proportions shifted a few degrees this way or that way? How would that look, and what would that say about us? He is a poet of fluctuation. Handsome, well groomed, and chicly if casually well dressed, Wurm talks in a very clear and direct way about what he does.
