The standard Lanczos method for computing matrix functions has a brutal memory requirement: storing an n×kn \times kn×k basis matrix that grows with every iteration. For a 500.000500.000500.000-variable problem needing 100010001000 iterations, that’s roughly 4 GB just for the basis.

While developing succinct data structures, I found myself needing to store large arrays of integers—values with no monotonicity or other exploitable patterns, that I knew came from a universe much smaller than their type’s theoretical capacity.

3. Results and Discussions 3.1. SC-OFMSWC Characterization Compost characteristics are reported in Table 1. The values fall within the limits imposed by the National legislation (previously cited Italian legislation) for mixed composted soil improvers, making them suitable for the subsequent experiments. Overall, the compost is well endowed with organic carbon (25% DM) and humic and fulvic acids (11.6% DM), is microbiologically safe, and has a moderate content of soluble salts.
