Gut Microbiota Composition and Cardiovascular Disease: A Potential New Therapeutic Target?
1. Introduction The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains a rich and complex population of microorganisms that constitutes the gut microbiota [1]. Considering the symbiotic interaction between the gut microbiota and their host, we can consider the host as a “superorganism” [2], whose metabolism is dependent on a combination of both microbial and human physiological processes, which perform immune and metabolic functions [1,3].
