STATE COLLEGE — Since January, State College boys lacrosse and head coach Tyler Kaluza have been using the word “grit” to define their program. “I think some people don’t practice what they preach,” said Kaluza. “These guys practice it, and every single thing they do – practice, games, in the classroom, in the community – they fight like hell.” Now, the word they’ve chosen to define their season has a defining game to go along with it.

CAMP HILL — York Suburban’s Nora Rumbaugh appeared to score a game-tying goal with 1:43 remaining in a District 3 quarterfinal with Red Land Tuesday night. Yet a whistle blew just before Rumbaugh got the shot off, instead sending the senior attacker back to the eight-meter line for a free position opportunity, stemming from a Patriots’ foul inside the Trojans’ attacking zone. The ensuing shot missed left of the goal and Red Land never looked back.

CAMP HILL – Ian Goodwin thought he’d only throw a handful of pitches when he took the mound in the seventh inning of a 1-1 tie Monday afternoon in a District 3-2A semifinal. Goodwin struck out Newport designated hitter Austin Baker, ran off the mound in celebration with full belief the Lions’ offense would get the job done. Instead, Goodwin pitched three more innings.
