1 INTRODUCTION Sleep is a fundamental part of human function, with reductions in sleep quality and quantity negatively affecting immune function (Mejri et al., 2014), memory (Walker, 2008) and cognitive function (Sufrinko et al., 2016). Adequate sleep, which includes achieving the recommended sleep time and efficiency, in addition to good sleep habits is particularly critical for athletes to aid their recovery and optimise sport performance (Fullagar et al., 2015).

Are you too old to be an Olympian? If you are older than 18 and not already competing at a high level of sport, it’s unlikely you’ll compete at the Olympics. The oldest Olympian ever was 72 but that was back in 1920 – Oscar Swahn was a Swedish shooter who completed at three Olympics, winning three gold medals. At the other end of the scale, Australia’s Chloe Covell is 14 and has booked her ticket to Paris in skateboarding.
