As I ascended the steps to London Bridge station to meet a friend, I wasn’t just out of breath – I couldn’t seem to inhale enough air. My breathing was shallow. I felt so weak I had to keep stopping. My friend, a health journalist, took one look at me and insisted we go immediately to the nearest A&E. I was seen quickly. A respiratory specialist ordered a lung X-ray and said I was to be kept in overnight.
