Tech companies still enthusiastic about digital transformation, despite economic uncertainty
Economic uncertainty has spurred many tech executives to pump the brakes on riskier innovation projects, but digital transformation is still perceived as the right target for investment. Leaders interviewed in February 2023 by Deloitte see it as worth the money and rife with opportunity.1Executives surveyed ranked modernizing digital infrastructure as high in potential benefit and relatively low in terms of the challenges in achieving it.
TMT Outlooks 2023: Changes in store for sports, media, and entertainment
The sports and media and entertainment industries are both faced with the challenge of engaging more deeply with fans—especially those in the Generation Z cohort—and creating experiences that keep consumers coming back for more. To explore these considerations in detail, Deloitte’s industry leaders recently discussed their perspectives and outlooks for the sports and media and entertainment industries in 2023.
Tech and semiconductor industries take stock in 2023
The tech industry has been in upheaval for the past few quarters, and the uncertainties don’t seem to be getting any more certain in the near term. United States and European governments are spending over US$100 billion to grow local semiconductor production,1 but macroeconomic factors and a shift from shortage to oversupply are near-term challenges.2 The same global and macroeconomic uncertainties may harry the tech industry as a whole, with the potential to put manufacturing and growth at risk.

As we enter the holiday season, we decided to round up a collection of important and insightful articles that appeared over the course of 2022. We hope you’ll take time to explore or revisit your favorite topics and reflect on the issues these pieces bring to the fore. We began the year with a roundup of our annual Outlooks for the media and entertainment, sports, telecom, technology, and semiconductor sectors. It’s worth looking back and noting how many of these insights played out as predicted.
Healthy holidays: Wearables and health data may tip the scales toward better nutrition
Many people start the new year resolving to undo the excesses of the holiday season and adopt healthy eating habits going forward. Technology can help. Many consumers with smartwatches use them to track exercise, count calories, and monitor their health in real time. Recent Deloitte research shows that many consumers surveyed are willing to share smartwatch data with grocers in exchange for personalized nutrition and food recommendations.
Bundles may drive consumer switch to 5G
5G is featuring more prominently in consumer wireless purchasing decisions. In the third edition of the Deloitte Connectivity and Mobile Trends Survey,1 we found that of the 20% of survey respondents who changed their mobile provider in the past two years, 5G service ranked fourth as the reason for switching. But when looking forward to subscribers thinking about switching their providers next year, 5G service rises in importance, second only to better value for money.
AllAnalytics - Michael Steinhart - Crunching Big Data Feeds to Improve Security
Log review and security information and event management (SIEM) are the tactics du jour for detecting and mitigating network breaches. Many companies are discovering, however, that correlating their network activity logs with external security feeds puts them in big data territory. Writing for Dark Reading, tech expert Robert Lemos discusses this issue in "Big Data Detectives," a special report released last week.
AllAnalytics - Beth Schultz - Viva the Data Revolution!
Sitting in traffic on my way home from DMA2013 yesterday, I was fiddling with the radio. I happened upon Jessie J's song, "Price Tag." I'm not a fan, and so I changed the channel quickly. But darn if I hadn't heard enough of the tune to get the chorus stuck in my head.
AllAnalytics - Michael Steinhart - Analytics: Where ...
We hear a lot about the underrepresentation of women in STEM jobs, but analytics is shaping up to be a level playing field, according to one industry expert's predictions for 2014. Steven Hillion, chief product officer at Alpine Data Labs, listed this assertion at the top of his new year's forecast: This prediction is based primarily on a talk that Hillion gave at this year's Strata Conference in New York.

Sentiment Analysis on the Cutting Edge
One of the much-vaunted benefits of text and social network analytics is the ability to determine how people feel. Whether by assigning weights to positive and negative terms, scanning for smiley emoticons, or using facial-recognition algorithms, sentiment analysis is garnering plenty of attention. In fact, it's going to be the main focus of a two-day conference this week in New York.
NYC Hosts Integrated Marketing Week
While All Analytics editor in chief Beth Schultz is covering Analytics 2014 in Frankfurt, I'm at the Integrated Marketing Week (IMW) conference stateside. IMW, which is a project of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), launched successfully last year and is expected to draw more than 1,500 marketers this year, according to its website. The conference runs today and tomorrow at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City.
Pushing the Edge at the Retail Shelf
Pushing the Edge at the Retail Shelf If retailers are serious about creating omnichannel, personalized relationships with customers and implementing dynamic pricing strategies, then the days of printed paper shelf labels are numbered. Electronic shelf-edge labels (ESL) are a hot product area at the National Retail Federation BIG Show, taking place this week in New York City.
Survey Shows Strong Demand for Omnichannel
Consumers want retailers to serve them targeted ads and special deals, and they're more likely to become loyal customers if the shopping experience remains consistent across channels, a new survey shows. The enterprise IT service provider Infosys underwrote an extensive survey of 1,000 consumers and 50 decision makers at large-scale retailers. Infosys released the results to coincide with last week's National Retail Federation BIG Show.
Hospitals Using Analytics to Maximize ROI
A new report suggests that healthcare organizations will be spending heavily on data warehousing and mining tools over the next five years, specifically to derive more value from their IT investments. In its "Essentials of the US Hospital IT Market, Winter 2013" report, HIMSS Analytics found that nearly half of hospitals have clinical data warehouses in place, up from 25% in 2009.

LEADERS FROM THE BUSINESS AND IT COMMUNITIES DUEL OVER CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY ISSUES Data visualization is an up-and-coming technology for businesses that want to deliver analytical results in a visual way, enabling analysts the ability to spot patterns more easily and business users to absorb the insight at a glance and better understand what questions to ask of the data.
