Apple's Cautious AI Strategy Could Have Been Its Smartest Move
You’ve probably heard someone say something along the lines of, “Apple is losing the AI race” or “Apple’s AI is lagging.” What if being behind on AI was intentional? Or maybe even a winning strategy? For years now, the media has treated Apple’s caution in integrating AI as a failure, approaching every underwhelming developer event as a catastrophe. That framing failed to assess what the company was doing behind the scenes.

AI Leaders Call for Rules on Synthetic DNA to Limit Bioweapons Risk
The big names in the artificial intelligence industry don’t always get along. We’ve seen lawsuits between AI companies and intense rivalries between leaders that turn into all-out feuds. But it seems that they generally agree on at least one thing: AI should not be used to create biological weapons. CEOs of some of the world’s leading AI companies signed a public letter this week urging governments to address the risks that could come from bad actors using their technology.

My First Google I/O Left Me Confused: Who Benefits From All This AI?
Four days ago, I arrived in Mountain View, California, to cover my first Google I/O developer conference, expecting the showmanship and AI hype I’m accustomed to hearing at events like this. Don’t get me wrong — I definitely got my share of AI promo as Google becomes, in the words of one of its employees, “unabashedly agent-first.” But really, what I found was a city split in two. The Google I/O keynote glittered with glossy demos.

Mindtrip's AI Flight Agent Wants to Solve the Messy Travel Plans Search Engines Can't
Over the weekend, I spent hours searching for flights for a summer girls’ trip and came up empty. Every option was either too expensive, landed at the wrong time or had two stops on the way — which I’m absolutely not doing. I checked multiple airlines, pieced together routes and even considered separate tickets. Nothing worked. That kind of frustration is exactly what Mindtrip is betting on.

Google Photos' New AI Tool Will Help You Picture Yourself in All Your Clothes

Character.AI Will Use AI to Let You Play a Character in Your Favorite Book
I can rip through a book or three a week, depending on my schedule. I just truly feel like there’s nothing better than becoming immersed in the plot and, specifically, diving into the minds of the characters. I’ve always gravitated toward fantasy books, with their mesmeric world-building and action-packed scenes. Like many people, I literally ached to be at Hogwarts when I was reading the Harry Potter series for the first time.

This animation startup wants to make it easier to tell open-ended stories
The current wave of generative AI animation often feels like a magic trick that only works once. You type in a prompt, a video appears, and if you don't like the result -- maybe the feet are all wonky, which is a regular issue with AI generations -- your only real option is to try a different prompt. This "black box" approach is exactly what Cartwheel, a new 3D animation startup, is trying to dismantle.
Hope, Hype or Horror? 'The AI Doc' Director Charlie Tyrell Questions What Comes Next
I write (and think) about AI for a living. In any given 30-minute period, I waver between worrying that AI will destroy everything I know and love, and believing — or at least wanting to believe — that it could change humanity for the better. Dread turns into optimism, which seeps into ambivalence, which then turns back into dread-induced cynicism. Rinse, repeat. Goodness, my central nervous system needs a break. That debate is at the heart of a new documentary arriving in theaters today, March 27.
