Introduction Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have surged since spring 2020, leading to the culling of 140 million poultry worldwide between October 2021 and December 2022 (Kevany 2022). The link between industrial agriculture and emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) is well established (Dhingra et al. 2018; Hautefeuille et al. 2020a, 2020b), and even the meat industry acknowledges its pandemic risks (FAIRR 2022a, 2022b).
