When biologist Patrick Robinson first spotted a dead elephant seal at Año Nuevo Coast Natural  Preserve and another one convulsing in February, he wasn’t that concerned. Finding a carcass at a nature preserve like Año Nuevo isn’t unusual, nor is seeing a sick or injured animal. Still, he recorded his observations.

Plants Facilitate Transition to Higher Water

This winter, crews with the nonprofit Save The Bay weeded more than two dozen acres of land near Bedwell Bayfront Park in Menlo Park. The workers were maintaining a “habitat transition zone,” sometimes called an “ecotone” or a “horizontal levee.” It’s an area where ecosystems meet and meld. In Menlo Park, it’s where rehabilitated tidal marshes merge with the land.

Having grown up on the Peninsula, I’ve seen this view on countless occasions, but it was my first time from this very spot.
