INTRODUCTION The immense biodiversity that we observe today is the consequence of organisms adapting to changing environments as they spread across the globe, but global biodiversity has experienced an unparalleled decline owing to environmental shifts and human activities, pushing our world closer to the onset of the sixth mass extinction event (Ghildiyal et al., 2023). Evolutionary biologists have been intrigued by the mechanism of this diversification.

An allele is selected when it is favored by natural selection. Consequently, the favored allele increases in frequency in the population and neighboring linked variation diminishes, causing so-called selective sweeps.
