How can AI democratise rural healthcare in Bangladesh?
In the near future, perhaps in a tin-roofed clinic in Kurigram, a 28-year-old health worker named Salma Begum might press a smartphone against a coughing toddler's chest. The device's screen could flicker, then display a message in Bangla: "m¤¢ve¨ wbD‡gvwbqv (Possible pneumonia detected). Seek care immediately." She exhales in relief. There isn't a doctor for miles—the nearest physician is two hours away by bus—but this tiny Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted tool might just save the boy's life.

Bangladesh must stop driving its talents away
August 7, 2025 DHAKA – In 2014, while working for a reputed company in Bangladesh, I had to wake up at 5am every day to catch a bus, which typically took around two hours to reach my workplace in Gazipur. After a full day of work, compounded by heavy traffic jams, I usually arrived home between 9 and 10pm. This left me with only six to seven hours for showering, dinner, spending time with my family, sleeping, and preparing for the next day.

How AI can help in disasters like the Milestone crash
I was born and raised in Dhaka, where I spent the first 25 years of my life before moving to the US in 2015. Today, I work as a research assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma and serve as part of a research group, whose mission is to develop safer, more efficient aircraft through AI, digital twin technologies, and predictive maintenance. We work on reducing production costs, improving airworthiness, and minimising material waste.
Why local garment industry must go nano
The rhythmic clatter of sewing machines may still define Bangladesh's garment factories, but in the near future, that familiar sound could fade beneath the shimmer of self-cleaning fabrics and the quiet of nanotechnology at work. As global apparel production enters a new era of advanced materials and smart design, nanotechnology, engineering at the molecular level, is set to transform what garments are, not just how they are made.
