What we learned investigating one hospital’s heart program

Since 2022, Benefis Health System, the major nonprofit hospital in Great Falls, has sought to bring a specialty heart procedure to the vast region it serves in central Montana. The endeavor introduced an option for local patients, but it was also a competitive move to align the hospital’s services with similar programs in Missoula and Billings, according to interviews with top hospital administrators.

When Bette Albright took an emergency flight to Salt Lake City in August 2025, her family prayed that doctors there would be able to save her life. Albright, 75, had a small tear in her aorta, the site of an unsuccessful heart valve replacement she had undergone weeks earlier at Benefis Health System, a nonprofit hospital with a primary campus in Great Falls and locations throughout central Montana. In Utah, medical records show that doctors couldn’t determine exactly what had caused the cut.

Will Ocasio-Cortez’s rally for Forstag matter?

About 800 people lined up in the 85-degree heat, and then rain, Thursday to see New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rally for Sam Forstag, one of four Democrats running for Montana’s Western Congressional District. Forstag faces Ryan Busse, Russell Cleveland and Matt Rains in Tuesday’s primary for a spot on the November ballot. Ocasio-Cortez, a national face of progressive politics, has many fans, as well as critics, in Montana and nationwide.
