ABSTRACT This analysis explores the concept of sportswashing, including its complexity and limitations. Addressing some recent critiques, we advocate for a reconceptualisation of sportswashing, on the basis of which we articulate two basic tenets. First, we argue that it is essential to understand the nature and necessity of complicity – herein referred to as the ‘elective affinity’ – between the actors involved.

1. Introduction Wellbeing has firmly established itself within contemporary practice, politics, and policy. Indeed, the cultural, commercial, and terrestrial landscape of the concept is staggering and manifests within popular discourse and across global organisations and institutions, national governments, workplaces, and consumer lifestyle products and services (Cederström and Spicer 2015).

Introduction Given its importance as a site of production and consumption of popular culture, stand-up comedy—as a genre of humor—is a growing area of scholarly inquiry. Nonetheless, in the substantive field of humor studies, racial comedy represents only a small proportion of the literature. Moreover, within this limited area, scholarship on Indigenous comedy occupies an even smaller terrain of sociological analysis.
