Austria's disappointing Euro 2016 campaign comes to abrupt end
Austria have been eliminated from Euro 2016. Here's an assessment of their disappointing campaign in France, and where the national team goes from here. After two disappointing performances against Hungary and Portugal, the deciding match against Iceland, especially the second half, was definitely the highlight of the competition. It was nerve-wracking, heart rates went up and fans felt like little children again. The team fought and gave everything it had.
David Alaba fails to fire in Austria's fortunate draw vs. Portugal
A more careful and tactically smarter Austria drew 0-0 against Portugal on Saturday evening in Paris. Marcel Koller's team managed to get a point thanks to some luck, but also because of an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Robert Almer. Austria took the pitch with a changed starting XI from the 2-0 defeat to hungary, with Watford's Sebastian Prodl in for the suspended Aleksandar Dragovic, while David Alaba took over the No. 10 role from Zlatko Junuzovic, who was out injured.
Ten-man Austria struggle to impose themselves in loss to Hungary
After a very promising first half, Austria lost 2-0 to Hungary following a harsh red card for centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic and a fantastic second-half performance by Bernd Storck's team. Despite David Alaba striking the post after just 30 seconds, Marcel Koller's team fell apart against a tactically astute Hungary. Adam Szalai's opening goal arrived on the back of mistakes from Martin Hinteregger, and four minutes later Austria were down to 10.
Austria look to Marc Janko and Aleksandar Dragovic for Euro 2016 inspiration
Marcel Koller and Marc Janko reflect on their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, in hopes of a stellar showing in France. Austria will take on Portugal, Hungary and Iceland in Group F. Here's how Marcel Koller's men are shaping up. Probably the easiest part of Koller's selection process, with no changes made as the Swiss tactician went for his trusted hands. Austria Vienna's Robert Almer, Ingolstadt's Ramazan "Rambo" Ozcan and Eintracht Frankfurt's Heinz Lindner are the chosen ones.
