Our heroes hatch a half-assed plan on Echo 3 [Apple TV+ recap] ★★☆☆☆
Echo 3‘s gung-ho warriors spring back into action after weeks of repose and dissolution. Prince decides he’s had enough of a glimpse into a life without his kidnapped wife, Amber, and he’s ready to become part of the rescue operation again. But he’s going to need to get back into her brother Bambi’s good graces if he wants to make any semblance of a clean getaway. Their next best hope is a DJ with bad security and bad habits — but getting him is going to be a chore and a half.
Echo 3 wallows in its warped, G.I. Joe worldview [Apple TV+ recap] ★☆☆☆☆
This week on Echo 3, showrunner, writer and director Mark Boal — known for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty — gets lost upriver trying to graft some semblance of a worldview onto his hollow, sadistic Apple TV+ jungle adventure. The kidnapped Amber’s captivity is explored, as is her captors’ thin psychology and political motivation. She tries to escape and everyone else suffers for it. It’s a boring and grim edition of Boal’s G.I. Joe fantasy.
Echo 3 is a deeply strange military thriller [Apple TV+ recap] ★★½
New Apple TV+ series Echo 3 follows two very different military men who venture to South America to rescue a mutual loved one during a clandestine war. Written and produced by Mark Boal, the mind behind Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker, the series is deeply strange, if certainly memorable. And itshows Apple TV+ heading in a new, possibly suspect, direction.

Triple Frontier (2019) - IMDb
This movie has a solid cast and it's thrilling and entertaining. The story and characters are simple and easy to follow. The film gives you just enough information and background about the main characters and puts them in enough believable peril. The movie's pretty predictable and by the last third of the movie the pacing slows down quite a bit. I enjoyed the moments the film presents though when the men are escaping.
Review: Triple Frontier is quite literally a miserable slog
Grrr, men! All muscles and sweat, guns 'n' grit, sports and spunk. But sometimes emotions too. Manly men, rappelling from helicopters, growing a beard. Laying our souls bare to one another in a series of grunts. Real men can communicate using open palm hand gestures to navigate through the streets of life son. Drop and give me fifty no-scopes. Men are complicated contradictions: chiselled yet indefinable; poets and filthy bog creatures; an army of one yet no man is an army. Caps.
‘Triple Frontier’ Review: Men on a Mission? Possible!
Image Gang of five: from left, Garrett Hedlund, Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam and Pedro Pascal. The tough-guy chatter and feelings in “Triple Frontier” are somewhat more rarefied than in the usual grunting action flick. That’s the idea, at any rate, in this slickly enjoyable, bankrupt take on a fail-safe formula, one that celebrates an ethos even more enduring than patriotism: old-fashioned American greed.
En el Valle de Elah

Detroit (2017) - IMDb
Director Katheryn Bigelow does a wonderful job of creating a great deal of tension. She does so by cutting from one tightly framed slightly wobbly shot to the next. Each character's face floods nearly the entire screen after each of these cuts. This makes the movie deeply personal and almost claustrophobic at times. The slight wobbles of the camera as it focuses on a face, adds to the uneasiness and unstable nature of the situation. What I'm saying is the movie is expertly directed.
Mark Boal on Why He Wrote ‘Detroit’
In the summer of 2014, I went up to Detroit to meet a man who had been very hard to find. He was called Cleveland Larry Reed, a common enough name, but it had taken a researcher several months to dig up a working telephone number. I left a few messages. When I finally got him on the phone, he wasn’t sure he wanted to see me, let alone talk about 50 years ago. I promised that I wouldn’t waste his time, and he eventually let me into his apartment.
“Why I Wrote Detroit,” By Mark Boal
What are we doing wrong? “Well, first of all, by “we” I assume you mean the public, the public approach or the public discourse, which means the discourse that takes place in the media. And for the purposes of this discussion, let us imagine that the media is white and thus approaches the topic of race as if they (the white people) were the answer and them (the black people) were the question.
Jessica Chastain in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’
Photo Jessica Chastain in "Zero Dark Thirty." There is a crucial scene in “Zero Dark Thirty” — Kathryn Bigelow’s brilliantly directed fictionalized account about the search for Osama bin Laden — in which three Central Intelligence Agency officers stop talking and look at a television. On the screen Barack Obama is speaking with a correspondent on “60 Minutes.” It’s Nov. 16, 2008.

The Kill Team: How U.S. Soldiers in Afghanistan Murdered Innocent Civilians
Early last year, after six hard months soldiering in Afghanistan, a group of American infantrymen reached a momentous decision: It was finally time to kill a haji. Among the men of Bravo Company, the notion of killing an Afghan civilian had been the subject of countless conversations, during lunchtime chats and late-night bull sessions. For weeks, they had weighed the ethics of bagging “savages” and debated the probability of getting caught.
