INTRODUCTION One of the foundational principles of ecology emerged 100 years ago when Lotka (1925) and Volterra (1926) introduced a theory for predator–prey dynamics as a system of simultaneous differential equations. From these equations, the Italian mathematician Vito Volterra (1926) recognized the prediction that an increase in deaths for both predators and prey will result in a decrease in the number of predators and a nonintuitive increase in prey abundance (Abrams, 2009).
