Photo by: Jakub Pabis on Unsplash While disability data collection methods have evolved in recent years, with more countries committing to using quality measures such as the Washington Group Questions, globally the picture of disability inclusion is still unclear.
How prejudice strips people with disabilities of their sexual and reproductive rights – Bhekisisa
Study reveals prejudice and inaccessibility excludes people with disabilities from accessing sexual and reproductive health services. (Judita Tamošiūnaitė, Pexels) Using sexual and reproductive health services can be awkward. This feeling of discomfort can discourage people from asking their doctor about contraceptive options or to check out infections.
South African study gives insights into sexual health needs of people with disabilities
Such encounters can be a bit awkward at best and – at worst – uncomfortable enough to discourage anyone from doing what’s needed to maintain their health and wellbeing. Buying condoms, asking a doctor about contraceptive options, having infections checked out, discussing bleeding or not bleeding, erections or their absence, are difficult for most people. This is why sexual and reproductive health services need to be organised with the service user’s emotional comfort in mind.
South African study gives insights into sexual health needs of people with disabilities

Download Festival: do accessibility and heavy metal mix?
The sun is finally starting to shine! Is summer on its way? It’s time, therefore, to start thinking about festivals. So we thought we’d speak to Mark Carew. He’s a 23-year-old Psychology PhD student from Canterbury, who last year went to Download Festival, and here tells us about his experience of the disabled viewing platform. Navigating through the mud, moshing with heavy metal fans and the craziness of a festival is hard enough without bringing along a little thing like cerebral palsy as well.
Mark Carew: Be creative
Let’s say you would like to write a novel. You have a plot summary, gained over weeks, months, years, which has formed in your mind while you have been out walking, running, having a bath. The plot is simple and effective, and you can describe it in less than a minute. Your friends like your characters, who you have been mentally revising in response to their questions. The plot has held together after attacks from all sides.
