Abstract This qualitative study explores concerns of mothers living with HIV about the consequences of HIV exposure for their children during pregnancy and early childhood, before and beyond a final HIV negative diagnosis. Conducted in South Africa’s Western Cape between January and April 2024, the study involved semi-structured interviews with 20 mothers whose children HIV-exposed, over one year old, tested HIV-negative at 12 months.

Psychometric properties of early childhood development assessment tools in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review

Discussion Based on 160 articles, available evidence on 10 psychometric properties of 117 ECD tools for children 0–6 years old in LMICs is fragmented, limited and heterogeneous. The most frequently provided evidence was on internal consistency reliability, test–retest reliability and/or concurrent, convergent and structural validity. Psychometric evidence on measurement invariance was the least commonly available. Although evidence came from 55 LMICs, four countries were most represented.

Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was granted from Stellenbosch University, South Africa (reference no. N21/07/065) and the University of Bath, UK (reference no. 22-055.) The Sinethemba study is designed with child protection principles in mind, and the impact of the data collection process on participants is a foremost concern. The study will follow ethical procedures used by the researchers in other studies working with similar at-risk groups.
