Auschwitz liberation 75 years ago marked in Houston
For Gilad Katz, the Holocaust is personal. At least a dozen members of his mother’s family were among the six million Jews systematically slaughtered by the Nazis. As a result, Katz, the Israel consul general in Houston, calls himself a third-generation survivor.
Czechs love their beer
After flying from Houston to Philadelphia and on to Prague, I boarded a train at the main railroad station for the 80-minute trip through verdant hills and thick forests full of pine and birch to Pilsen. Here in this city 58 miles southeast of Prague, signs for Pilsner Urquell beer are plastered outside restaurants along with huge steins filled with the foamy drink.

Lawsuit over city pension bond decided but appeal planned
A lawsuit that contends Mayor Sylvester Turner misled voters into approving a $1 billion pension bond referendum last year was decided on Friday in favor of Houston, according to a city news release. “Today, State District Judge Mark Morefield dismissed the case,” according to a statement from the city issued Friday evening. The lawsuit says that city officials plan tto use the bonds' passage to sidestep a voter-approved limit on the property tax revenue Houston can collect.
1968: The most important year in modern American history
1968: The most important year in modern American history In the snows of New Hampshire 50 years ago, youthful volunteers with long hair and beards were encouraged to cut their locks and "get clean for Gene." That was U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy, a poetry-writing Minnesotan, who half a century ago this week stunned the political world by capturing 42 percent of the Democratic primary vote against the sitting president, Texas' Lyndon B. Johnson.
I wish the Astros well. Just not against my Dodgers.
In April 1958, Time put on its cover a photo of Walter O'Malley, a cigar-smoking, bespectacled New Yorker and owner of the newly christened Los Angeles Dodgers. The occasion was the coming of major league baseball to the West Coast. O'Malley, a bankruptcy lawyer by training, conceived of a ballpark that became Dodger Stadium and persuaded the rival New York Giants to join him in the West Coast move — to San Francisco. O'Malley was a big man for a growing city.
My mother, the daughter of immigrants
Before she died nearly 20 years ago, my mother read one last book: "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt. He was the Brooklyn-born son of Irish immigrants who grew up in grinding poverty. He called the 1996 memoir his "epic of woe." My mother, born Mildred Ellman as the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants, saw in that tale similarities to her own childhood in Depression-era Los Angeles.
Split decision by judges could lead to more minority congressional districts in Texas
In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas ruled late Friday that boundaries of some of the 36 congressional districts in the state violate the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Rest in peace, Tom Hayden
Tom Hayden in 1973. Tom Hayden in 1973. I first met Tom Hayden in the summer of 1970 when he was organizing for a now-forgotten cause in Berkeley, Calif. He came to my apartment, next to Red Family Commune daycare, where neighborhood children could frolic. His future wife, Jane Fonda, delivered her young daughter there each morning while shooting a film, and to the surprise of my roommates and me, occasionally walked across our newly planted back lawn.
One last season with Vin Scully, voice of the Dodgers
As the Major League baseball season enters the homestretch, here in Houston, I increasingly plan my weekends around the schedule of my boyhood team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. On TV or online, I listen to the man who as much as anyone has unified my hometown since 1958, when the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to L.A. Edward Vincent "Vin" Scully, the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers, is for many the voice of summer in Southern California. At the end of this season, he plans to retire.
My dad's letters from WWII show a man I never knew
My dad's letters from WWII show a man I never knew My father died almost eight years ago, but lately I've been getting to know him in a way I never did when he was alive. He is speaking to me through hundreds of letters mailed home during World War II. My mom told me about the letters when she was dying, but only now, after several moves, am I going through them systematically. Opening each one is like unearthing a time capsule of my father's life.
Blood brothers - Houston Chronicle
It meant a lot to us as kids in the '50s. It means a lot to me now. When I was young, my best friend Ron lived two doors down. We must have been seven or eight when we saw a TV show about Native Americans -- not that anyone called them Native Americans in the '50s. We decided to imitate the heroes of the show, to become blood brothers. It was especially momentous for Ronnie. He was a stout-framed kid, but the mere thought of blood brought him to the point of tears. He wanted to do it anyway.
A California Texans will love
McCarthy says the new job will put him in a better position to fight for California's 23rd District, which has its own oil patch and vast farmlands. "I've always said I want to be able to do the things that the district has wanted about changing this economy, changing the amount of debt this country has, turning us back around," McCarthy, elected in 2006, told a Bakersfield talk radio program.
