Layers of immunity: Deconstructing the Drosophila effector response
eLife Assessment This work provides one of the first important attempts to look at Drosophila immune responses against bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens in a way that combines the roles of four major arms in immunity (Imd signaling, Toll signaling, phagocytosis, and melanization) rather than studying them separately. The findings are compelling and the tools provided can be used as they are, or built upon, in various contexts.
Functional Characterization of Paillotin: An Immune Peptide Regulated by the Imd Pathway with Pathogen-Specific Roles in Drosophila Immunity
Abstract Insects, such as Drosophila melanogaster, rely on innate immune defenses to combat microbial threats. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play an important role in limiting pathogen entry and colonization. Despite intensive research into the regulation and biochemical properties of AMPs, their exact significance in vivo has remained uncertain due to the challenges of mutating small genes.

The eponymous character of Anora, a feisty 23-year-old Brooklyn sex worker, lives the sort of hardscrabble and precarious life that Sean Baker has vigorously tracked across his work. But while Baker’s protagonists are typically mired in the same place, Ani (Mikey Madison), as Anora emphatically prefers to be called, manages to escape the familiar, and crash through the class divide with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball.

Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall chaotically drops us into the chalet of Sandra (Sandra Hüller), Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their visually impaired young son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner), in the French Alps. Sandra, a successful German writer, is in the midst of an interview with a visiting journalist (Camille Rutherford) that an unseen Samuel attempts to derail with his ceaseless blaring of an instrumental cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” from his upstairs office.
Varying phylogenetic signal to four bacterial pathogens across species of Drosophilidae
Abstract Pathogen host shifts – where a pathogen jumps from one host species to another – are important sources of emerging infectious diseases. Although viral pathogens are a major source of emerging infectious diseases, there is a growing focus on the emergence of novel bacterial infections through host shifts.
Response to: “Bad bibliometrics don’t add up for research or why research publishing policy needs sound science”
We have received a diverse, global, and humbling response to our preprint “The Strain on Scientific Publishing.” We thank everyone for the kind words, thoughtful commentaries, and critiques from across the spectrum. We embrace the opportunity to critically re-evaluate our positions and better our understanding of the data. This is Open Science at its best, and we fully support it. A recently-published Frontiers Media “science news” blog commented publicly on our work.
'The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed' Review
In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term BDSM relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him.
Hard Chords Made Easy
What do you do when you come across a Bb or an Eb chord in a songbook? Struggle with a barre fingering? Slap on a capo? Turn the page and go on to the next song? Take up the harmonica? All of these are possibilities, of course, but the idea is to play these chords, not succumb to them. You want to be able to make not-so-common chords sound good without hurting yourself in the process. In this chapter we will dispense with barre chords, which are a handful for many guitarists.
More Than Black or White: Melanization and Toll Share Regulatory Serine Proteases in Drosophila
Highlights • Two distinct pathways activate the melanization reaction in Drosophila • Serine proteases regulating the Toll pathway also regulate melanization • Hayan and Psh redundantly regulate the Toll pathway downstream of pattern recognition Summary The melanization response is an important defense mechanism in arthropods. This reaction is mediated by phenoloxidases (POs), which are activated by complex extracellular serine protease (SP) cascades.

4 Things You Should Know About Working With 4PLs
Every so often someone coins a business term that’s so widely embraced it takes on a life of its own. That’s what happened to the logistics industry in 1996 when a leading consulting firm introduced the concept of fourth-party logistics. Also known as 4PL, the moniker was supposed to be synonymous with using a high-level consultant to strategically integrate a company’s supply chain.
November is the 50th anniversary of ISU basketball tradition
This month marks the 50th anniversary of the start of ISU basketball fans’ tradition of greeting the opposing players with five claps as each player is introduced. In 1967, the games were played in ISU’s armory, the bleachers were steel frame and plank. The whole building shook as the crowd stomped their feet as the action got exciting. There was an earlier tradition of greeting opposing players in a rude, crude and socially unacceptable manner.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Lost opportunities in northern Minnesota
Unfortunately, Beltrami County Board members have been slow to respond, even reluctant, to support such key land acquisitions. Reasons typically stem from constituents' concern over lost tax revenues, the logic being that private property owners pay taxes, hence public lands reduce future tax dollars. In fact, this is typically untrue. An ongoing Payment-in-Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program in Minnesota provides strong compensation to counties in situations like this.

Letter: Refugee resettlement bill violates our values
motivations, let's not get caught up in the heated national discourse. Let's instead evaluate the evidence related to this issue from a rational, compassionate perspective. Both locally and nationally, it is not the case that refugees commit crime at a rate higher than, or even comparable to, U.S. citizens. Fargo law enforcement has been referenced making this point numerous times in The Forum.
Commentary: Developing the future: life course epidemiology, DOHaD and evolutionary medicine
In advancing new concepts in science, it is often wise to be one’s own harshest critic, and this is the position that Ben-Shlomo et al. have taken in their comprehensive review1 of the recent history and the potential of life course epidemiology, a concept of which they were leading architects.
Hanson: Thanks to Dallas County voters for their support
I would like to thank the residents of Dallas County for their support in the primary for re-election as county supervisor. I am very proud of the fact that Dallas County is financially healthy and is a place where people want to live, work and play. We will continue to build on our progress, maintain fiscal stability and low taxes, ensuring our dollars are spent wisely, and provide quality services and a balanced budget.
Week in Review: Macy's Downfall Sends an Omnichannel Message
Despite all the doom and gloom news that came out of Macy’s, Inc. on Jan. 6, chairman and CEO Terry Lundgren said its omnichannel investments are paying off. In November and December, the company filled nearly 17 million online orders at macys.com and bloomingdales.com, a new record for the company and an increase of about 25% over last year, based on significant new fulfillment capacity, site functionality and aggressive digital marketing.
How to Win Over the Hearts, Minds, and Business from Millennial Shoppers
Generational gaps are nothing new. Baby boomers faced parents who didn’t understand the Beatles and then turned around to become frustrated by their slacker Gen X kids, who in turn had millennials who they now present with participation trophies. Those stereotypes may be pretty far from reality, but the generations do differ in their attitudes and behaviors. Closing those gaps is critical to retailers, especially when considering the largest growth generation: the Millennials.
Hudson’s Bay Company to Acquire Gilt

Resolve To Save: 5 Moving Ways to Offset Package Rate Increases
While most of us are still busy ringing in 2016, the nation’s primary package handlers are equally busy implementing their annual rate increases. As a result, it promises to be anything but a Happy New Year for retailers trying to watch their bottom line. Thankfully these package rate increases don’t automatically mean your company has to raise prices or put its shipping in the red.
