Fire as a driver of pyro-thermal niche variation in Acacia
1 Introduction Many plant species have evolved to persist in fire-prone regions under specific fire regimes (Whelan, 1995; Keeley et al., 2011). Fire-related heat shock can break seed dormancy for some species, allowing germination to occur in the post-fire environment to replace killed individuals and enable overall species persistence (Miller and Murphy, 2017).

Osteomyelitis caused by Streptococcus intermedius in immunocompetent adults - a case report and systematic literature review
European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, Jul 2023 Hematogenous osteomyelitis caused by Streptococcus intermedius is rare, particularly in immunocompetent adults. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the clinical presentation, prognosis as well as treatment of this disease, with the focus on immunocompetent adults.

Case Report: A severe case of immunosuppressant-refractory immune checkpoint inhibitor-mediated colitis rescued by tofacitinib
1 Introduction Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4), have become a mainstay in the treatment of several cancers, and achieve their effect by restoring the immunological response against tumor cells (1).
Beyond the ego network: The effect of distant connections on node anonymity
Ensuring privacy of individuals is of paramount importance to social network analysis research. Previous work assessed anonymity in a network based on the non-uniqueness of a node's ego network. In this work, we show that this approach does not adequately account for the strong de-anonymizing effect of distant connections.

All-optical attoclock for imaging tunnelling wavepackets - Nature Physics
Abstract Recent measurements of time delays during tunnelling of cold atoms through an optically created potential barrier have fuelled an ongoing debate about possible time delays during light-induced tunnelling of an electron from an atom. Yet, such a delay—whether it is present or not—is only one quantity characterizing the tunnelling wavepacket, whilst the underlying dynamics are richer.
Quantifying ERK activity in response to inhibition of the BRAFV600E-MEK-ERK cascade using mathematical modelling - British Journal of Cancer
Abstract Background Simultaneous inhibition of multiple components of the BRAF-MEK-ERK cascade (vertical inhibition) has become a standard of care for treating BRAF-mutant melanoma. However, the molecular mechanism of how vertical inhibition synergistically suppresses intracellular ERK activity, and consequently cell proliferation, are yet to be fully elucidated.
Predictors of COVID-19 epidemics in countries of the World Health Organization African Region - Nature Medicine
Abstract Countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region have experienced a wide range of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemics. This study aimed to identify predictors of the timing of the first COVID-19 case and the per capita mortality in WHO African Region countries during the first and second pandemic waves and to test for associations with the preparedness of health systems and government pandemic responses.

The World's Tallest Tropical Tree in Three Dimensions
Here we report the recent discovery of the world's tallest tropical tree (Shorea faguetiana), possibly the world's tallest angiosperm (flowering plant), located in the rainforests of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. In addition, we provide a novel three-dimensional exploration of the dimensions of this remarkable tree and use these data to speculate on what drives the limits of tree height.
